Chapter Sixteen Kristen’s Request

It was pitch black outside. When they got outside, they could hear the DJ. “All right, slowing it down” he said. The sound of applause came from inside. The music was softer now. They walked onto the gazebo. The lights were on and two couples were dancing. Robert took Kristen right to the middle of the gazebo. “Shall we?” asked Robert smiling and hold out a hand. Kristen looked at him. “You’re serious?” she asked. “Why not” replied Robert, taking her hand and placing his other hand on her waist. He lifted Kristen up so she was standing on his feet. Kristen smiled, closed her eyes and shook her head slightly. Her eyes opened and Robert started dancing. They stared into each other eyes. “See, you’re dancing” said Robert. “At the dance” said Kirsten. They smiled at each other.

While they were dancing, the other couples left and went inside. Robert and Kristen kept on dancing. They were quiet for a moment. “Robert, why did you save me? If you just let the venom spread, I could be like you by now” said Kristen. “You don’t know what you’re saying. You don’t want this” said Robert. “I want you. Always” said Kristen. “I’m not gonna end your life for you” said Robert. “I’m dying already. Every second, I get closer. Older” said Kristen. “That the way it’s supposed to be” said Robert. Something came to Kristen. “Ashley said that she saw me like you. I heard her” she said. “Her visions change” said Robert. “Yeah, based on what people decide. I’ve decided” said Kristen. They stopped dancing and Robert set Kristen down on her feet, starring at her. “So that’s what you dream about. Becoming a monster” said Robert. “I dream about being with you forever” said Kristen. “Forever? (He put his hand on the back of Kristen’s neck. Kristen tilted her head back.) And you’re ready right now?” asked Robert. “Yes” replied Kristen. Robert tilted her back and Kristen closed her eyes. Robert started to lean slowly over her. His mouth getting close to Kristen throat.

Instead of biting her, Robert kissed her. Kristen opened her eyes. Robert pulled back a bit to look into her face, Kristen looked up at him. “Is it not enough just to have a long and happy with me?” asked Robert. Kristen stood up properly and looked into his eyes. “Yeah. For now” she replied. Robert got a little upset with that and put his hand on the back of Kristen’s neck again. Both of them closed their eyes. Robert leaned in and they kissed on the lips. The kiss went on for a minute. When the kiss was done, Robert had Kristen standing on his feet and they started dancing again. “No one will surrender tonight, but I won’t give in. I know what I want” thought Kristen. While they were dancing, they didn’t realise that Rachelle had been watching them from an upstairs window, plotting her revenge.

Chapter Fifteen The Dance

Billy walked outside as soon as he heard the sound of Robert’s car cut out. He stopped when he saw that Kristen was already out and leaning against the side of the car. Robert and Kristen looked at each other and smiled. Kristen looked at Billy and walked towards him. Billy froze and his eyes filled with tears. When Kristen was close enough, he took her in his arms and hugged her fiercely. The tears leaked out. “Dad, don’t get all weepy on me” said Kristen. “These are happy tears Kristen. I thought you would never walk again” said Billy. Robert just watched from where he stood.

Three nights later Billy and Robert were sitting at the kitchen table in Kristen’s home. Robert was wearing a suit. Robert had talked Kristen into going to the dance with him. Billy had a can of beer while Robert had a glass of untouched water in front of him. Billy took a sip of beer and Robert cleared his throat. The movement from upstairs showed that Kristen was coming down. Billy and Robert got up and walked into the hallway. When they reached the foot of the stairs, they froze. Kristen stopped two steps from the bottom. Her hair was curly. She was wearing a deep blue sleeveless dress and one cut down Chuck Taylor shoe, (she was still in the cast, but it was a big walking cast now). In one hand she held a white cardigan and a small light blue bag. She looked down at herself for a second. “Ashley lent me the dress. (She looked at herself again). The cast is...” she said and sniggered. Robert just looked at her. “You’re perfect” he said. Kristen looked up at the same time that Billy gave him a look. Kristen smiled at him. “I’ll take care of her, Chief Charles” said Robert turning to Billy. “I’ve heard that before” said Billy without looking at Robert. Kristen shot him a look and walked down the stairs. Robert opened the front door as soon as Kristen was down. “All right, Kristen” said Billy. Robert walked outside, Kristen looked at Billy, but Billy was looking after Robert. He turned to Kristen. “I put a new can of pepper spray in your bag” he said. “Dad” said Kristen getting embarrassed. “And... Well, you look beautiful” said Billy. “Thanks” said Kristen smiling again. There was a pause. “See you” said Kristen and walked out. Billy watched after her.

The dance was being held in a 1920s inn. The parking lot was full of cars. There wasn’t a parking space in the front, so Robert stopped the car, got out, helped Kristen out and led her to a small wooden bench by the woods. “Hey. I’ll be right back” said Robert as Kristen sat down. He shut the passenger door and went back to the driver’s door. Kristen starred after him as he drove away to find a parking space around the back. “Kristen” came a voice. She turned around to see Taylor coming out of the woods behind her, wearing a long sleeved shirt and tie. “Taylor. Hey” said Kristen. Taylor looked at her and she looked at him. “Nice” said Taylor. “You, too. Are you crashing the dance or something? Did you come with a date?” asked Kristen. “No” replied Taylor and walked towards her. He sat down next to her and they looked at each other. “My dad paid me to come talk to you. Twenty bucks” said Taylor and chuckled. “Let’s hear it” said Kristen feeling that she knew what was coming. “Just don’t get mad, ok? He wants you to break up with your boyfriend” said Taylor. Kristen looked at him. “It’s just, he said, quote, “We’ll be watching you”” said Taylor. Taylor laughed and Kristen gave him a weird look. “Ok, well, tell him, “Thanks”” said Kristen. “Ok” said Taylor still laughing. “And to pay up” said Kristen. “Ok. Let me help you” said Taylor. He had calmed down and saw Kristen getting up. They stood up. “Taylor” came Robert’s voice. They looked up and saw him coming over, holding Kristen’s cardigan. “I’ll take it from here” said Robert standing next to Kristen. Robert and Taylor starred at each other for a minute. “Guess I’ll see you around, Kristen” said Taylor without taking his eyes off Robert. Robert looked down at Kristen and she looked up at him for a moment. Robert placed Kristen’s cardigan around her shoulders. “All right” said Kristen looking at Taylor before by led away by Robert. When Kristen looked away, Robert shot a look at Taylor. Taylor turned and walked back into the woods. As they walked Kristen put her cardigan on fully and Robert looked after Taylor. Kristen looked up at him. “I leave you alone for two minutes, and the wolves descend” said Robert. Kristen sniggered and looked away. Robert smiled and they walked on.

When they got around the back, they had to walk on a red carpet. Farther up was an arch with a photographer taking photos of everyone who passed through. “I can’t believe you’re making me do this” said Kristen when it was their turn for the photo. “Just smile” said Robert. The photo was taken and they moved on. In the garden was a gazebo with lights hanging all over the roof and the pillars. They walked up the steps towards the back entrance of the inn. As they walked closer they could hear the music. It was upbeat music. When they came to the doorway, Robert grabbed Kristen around the waist and lifted her up, over the last step and set her back down. As they walked into the room, they looked around. There was a disco ball hanging from the ceiling, a black jack table and the dance floor. A lot of people were dancing. “Wow. You are really trying to kill me” said Kristen and looked away. “The dance is an important rite of passage. I didn’t want you miss anything” said Robert looking down at her. “Oh” said Kristen looking at him and quickly away. Robert held her by the hand and together they walked around. They saw Michael and Anna having their picture taken next to a cardboard cut out car. Michael was wearing a black tuxedo and Anna was wearing a bright pink sleeveless dress that made her boobs look big. Michael made gunshot hand jesters and them while Anna just waved. Robert just looked at them, but Kristen was stunned at what the dress made Anna’s boobs look like. She made a hand jester and pulled a face. Anna smiled and Michael made another gunshot hand jester. Robert and Kristen looked at each other smiling before turning away. They saw Gregory wearing a black tuxedo dancing with his date. He did make some moves on Kristen. Both Robert and Kristen found it funny. They walked away as Gregory turned back to his date. As they walked, Robert got Kristen a drink from a waiter. They walked on and saw Justin and Christian at the sound system. Justin wasacting like the DJ. Justin was wearing a black shirt with his suit, a pink bow and a bowler hat. Christian was wearing a sleeveless light pink dress. She saw Robert and Kristen and patted Justin on the shoulder. Justin looked up, smiled and held up a hand. “Kristen, hey!” he called. Kristen waved back. Robert looked at her and saw that she was making a face. She looked at him. “Do you want to go?” asked Robert. “Yeah” replied Kristen quickly. They turned and walked back to go outside.

“Who are you talking about, Elizabeth?” asked Kellan, coming over. “Robert” replied Elizabeth. “Speaking of Robert, he wants to see you” said Kellan, poking Kristen softly in the arm. “Alright” said Kristen sitting up. Elizabeth helped Kristen onto Kellan’s back and once she was safely on, Kellan walked into the garden. “Kristen, I know Robert, Ashley, Peter and Elizabeth have told you their stories, so do you mind hearing mine?” asked Kellan. “No, of course not” replied Kristen. Kellan grinned and walked a little slower.

“I was born Kellan McDale in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in 1917, my eyes were bright blue before it happened and I was turned in 1935 at the age of eighteen. I had what my parents considered a wild adolescence; never one to worry about the consequences, I ran with the wrong crowd that drunk, gambled, and womanized” said Kellan. “A lot of people were like that, it’s normal for some” said Kristen. “Not much has changed now a days” said Kellan.

“I was always a help to my family, however. I was an excellent hunter and woodsman, and always kept the family supplied with game. When I was out on a routine hunting trip in the Smoky Mountains, I was attacked by a large black bear. I was close to losing consciousness when I thought I heard a second bear fighting with the first. I figured they were battling over who would get my corpse” said Kellan. Kristen shuddered. “Not pretty, is it?” asked Kellan. “No” replied Kristen shaking her head.

“Then the growling stopped and I felt like I was flying. I managed to open my eyes and saw what I thought was an angel. When the transformation began and the fiery agony spread through my body, I was sure I’d died and gone to hell” said Kellan. “The angel was Nikki” said Kristen. “Yeah” said Kellan smiling to himself.

“When the pain left me, I learned what had really happened to me. In my delirium, I’d seen Nikki as an angel and Peter as God, but in fact they were both vampires – and now I was a vampire, too. I took the truth in stride; I was never one to worry about situations outside of my control. I continue to think of Nikki as my angel” said Kellan. “That sounds nice” said Kristen.

“With my naturally happy nature, I adjusted easily to the idea of being a vampire. Learning to control myself, however, was a more difficult challenge. In the years just after my transformation, I was often unable to resist human blood. The Simons were forced to move often until I learned to restrain myself” said Kellan. “But you’re alright now” said Kristen. “Yeah, it took years of practice through” said Kellan.

“I genuinely bonded with all the members of my new family, aside from my dietary lapses, also made their lives more comfortable. My easygoing nature brought out Robert’s more optimistic side, and Nikki became a different person altogether” said Kellan. “Robert never told me that” said Kristen. “I’m surprised at him. I thought he would told you that” said Kellan.

“See Robert, I told you, Kellan would tell her he’s story and so would Peter and Elizabeth” came Ashley’s voice. Kristen blinked and looked around. They were in a small green patch of the woods. Robert, Ashley and Jackson were standing a few feet in front of them. Kellan set Kristen down of her feet. Jackson came over and he and Kellan each placed one of Kristen’s arms around their shoulders. “What are you doing?” asked Kristen. “We’re gonna try and get the feeling back into your legs” replied Kellan. “See if we can get you walking” said Jackson. With that Kellan and Jackson started to walk Kristen around in circles. Kristen put one foot in front of the other. After a few minutes, Kellan and Jackson let go of her. Kristen stood there without a support. “I’m standing” she said smiling. Ashley walked up behind her while Robert moved to stand in front of her. “You can do it” said Robert and held out his hands. Kristen understood and started to walk slowly towards him. When she was almost there, Robert took her by the hands and pulled her in his chest. He held her there for a moment. Then he turned back to face Ashley and she started to walk slowly back to her. This time Robert walked behind her. Kristen was nearly there when she tripped and fell into Ashley’s arms. “I was walking!” exclaimed Kristen feeling like her heart would burst. From behind a tree Peter, Elizabeth and Nikki were watching.

Chapter Thirteen Elizabeth’s past

Later that day, Kristen was lying on the sofa, looking at her bite mark scar. When the sunlight hit it, it shined like diamonds. “Kristen, you shouldn’t let that bother you” said Elizabeth, coming over. “I’m just having trouble getting used to it” said Kristen. “Here” said Elizabeth and placed a wrist support over it. “Peter wants you to keep it on when you’re in the sun” she said. “Ok” said Kristen smiling. There was a moment of silence. “Kristen, would you mind if I told you my story?” asked Elizabeth. Kristen sat up. “No, of course I wouldn’t mind” she said. Elizabeth smiled and sat down next her.

“I was born Elizabeth Pratt in Columbus, Ohio in 1898, my eyes were brown before it happened and I was turned in 1921 at the age of twenty-three. In 1911, I fell from and broke my leg while climbing a tree. The local doctor was away, and I ended up being treated by Peter. Although I mentioned it to no one at the time, meeting Peter affected me deeply. He was unlike anyone I had ever met – genuinely thoughtful, and truly interested in what I had to say. Unfortunately, he was in town only briefly and soon left, but I never forgot him” said Elizabeth. “Love at first sight” said Kristen. “Just like you and Robert” said Elizabeth smiling.

“In 1920 something terrible happened, I was raped by a man named Charles Emerson. When I discovered that I was pregnant, I was terrified about what my parents would say. They would want me to abort the baby, but I couldn’t do it. I ran away and went to Ashland, Wisconsin, where I posed as a war widow. In order to support myself, I pursued an old dream being a schoolteacher” said Elizabeth. “I didn’t know you wanted to be a teacher” said Kristen. “It was my dream, but my father would never let me do it” said Elizabeth.

“I began building a life for myself and my baby. I loved my unborn child more than my own life. But two days after my son was born, he died of Lung fever. Feeling as if I had lost everything, I walked to a cliff outside of town and jumped” said Elizabeth. “That must have been unbearable” said Kristen. “It was, as the mother of a child, you feel like your life is nothing compare to your child’s life” said Elizabeth.

“I regained consciousness in excruciating pain. Despite the pain, I was amazed to see Peter again, not sure if I was in heaven or hell. When the transformation was over, Peter explained that he’d turned me into a vampire in order to save me life. I was not as upset as he had expected. Adjusting to my new vampire nature had its challenges, and there were times when the call of human blood was too strong for me to resist; still I was happy to be with the man I’d always idolized. My youthful crush transitioned easily into full-fledged love” said Elizabeth. “Looks like you finally got your handsome Prince” said Kristen. “Yeah, you could put it that way” said Elizabeth.

“Before long, Peter and I married. I never lost my maternal instincts, and as one of the oldest Simons, I automatically fell into a mothering role with Robert and, later, the other members of the family” said Elizabeth. “Did Robert tell you, what he did when he broke away from you for awhile?” asked Kristen. “Yes he did. I don’t hate him for what he did, but I’m happy with him for it. I was shocked to learn that Charles was his first victim” replied Elizabeth.

Chapter Twelve Peter tells his past

Billy carried Kristen downstairs in his arms and helped Peter get her into his car. “Robert will bring her home later” said Peter. Billy nodded and looked at Kristen who was sitting in the front. Peter and Ashley got in and drove away. When they got into the woods, Peter looked at Kristen. “You alright Kristen, you seem very quiet?” he asked. “I’m just thinking about Cam” replied Kristen. Peter looked between Ashley and Kristen. “You told her didn’t you, Ashley?” he asked. “How comes Robert can tell her his and I felt she should know” replied Ashley. Peter looked at the road thinking about something. When they pulled up to the house, Robert was already waiting for them, rushed to the car and lifted Kristen out and into his arms. “Did Ashley frighten you?” he asked. “No, but it gave me a lot to think about” replied Kristen. Robert gave Ashley a look. “No arguing in front of her. She’s been through a lot lately” said Elizabeth coming down the steps. Kellan, Nikki and Jackson stood in the doorway. “Take her to my office, I’ll look at her in there” said Peter. Robert walked into the house carrying Kristen in his arms.

Peter’s office was full of books and paintings. A huge mahogany desk and a leather chair stood in the room. Robert set Kristen down on the desk and looked at Peter. “I’ll leave you to it” he said. He kissed Kristen on the forehead and left. Peter turned to Kristen and smiled. “How are you feeling today?” he asked. “No pain, but I’m fed up and bored” replied Kristen. Peter touched the place where the glass had cut into Kristen’s leg. “That’s healed nicely” he said. He held up Kristen’s arm and frowned at her wrist. “I’m afraid that the bite mark will become a scar” he said. “Does it have it have any vampire properties?” asked Kristen. “It will be cooled than the rest of your body and it will shine in sunlight” replied Peter. Kristen looked away. “Kristen, I know that Robert and Ashley have told you their stories, do you mind if I told you mine?” asked Peter. “No, of course not” replied Kristen. Peter smiled at her.

“I was born in London, England in 1640, my eyes were bright blue before it happened and turned at the age of twenty-three in 1663. My father was an Anglican Pastor, he was a crusader against evil, leading hunts through London and the surrounding areas for witches, werewolves and vampires. Self-righteous and compassionless, my father caused many innocent people to be burned” said Peter. “That horrible” said Kristen. “I’m afraid that’s what people were like back then” said Peter sadly.

“He wasn’t in charge for long?” asked Kristen. “When he grew too old, he put me in charge of these raids. However, I had a very different temperament. I was not as quick to see evil where there was none. I was smart and persistent, though, and I eventually discovered an actual coven of vampires living in the sewers. I gathered a group of hunters and we waited for darkness to fall, suspecting that this was when the vampires would come out” replied Peter.

“What happened?” asked Kristen. “When a thirsty vampire did emerge, he attacked us. Two were killed and I was wounded. Knowing that anything infected by the monster would be burned, I hid myself in a nearby cellar. During the transformation I never cried out, despite the agony I felt. When it was finally over and I realized what I had become, I was horror-struck. I tried to destroy myself by jumping from great heights and attempting to drown myself. When these methods didn’t work, I tried to starve myself to death” replied Peter. “That’s worse than what Ashley’s family did to her” said Kristen. “It is in a way” said Peter. There was a pause.

“The thirst was overwhelming, but I found the strength to resist. Months passed, and I, filled with self-loathing, kept to the loneliest places I could find, places where I wouldn’t stumble across a human. I understood my willpower was weakening” said Peter. “Didn’t you drink animal blood?” asked Kristen. “I’m getting there” replied Peter. “Sorry” said Kristen.

“One night a herd of deer passed by and, crazed with thirst, I attacked without thinking. After feeding, I felt my strength and sense of self return, and I realized I could live without killing human beings. I would feed on animals, just as I always had, drinking their blood now instead of eating their flesh” said Peter. “That sounds like the Peter, Robert told me about” said Kristen. “It was only the beginning” said Peter. Kristen smiled.

“Knowing that my father would hate me no matter how I lived my new life, I never returned home. I watched my father a few times from a distance but never made contact” said Peter. “That must have been hard of you” said Kristen. “It so very hard, but it was for the best” said Peter. Kristen looked away feeling a little bit uneasy. Thinking what Billy and Sarah would do if she disappeared and never came back.

“I had always been eager to learn, and now I had unlimited time. By night I studied music, science, and medicine in the universities of Europe. During my travels I encountered others of my kind. Most vampires I crossed paths with responded to my amicability; in this way I was a novelty among the vampires” said Peter. “That’s where you got your interest in medicine?” asked Kristen. “Yeah, it was” said Peter and smiled.

“While studying in Italy in 1700, I was discovered by an ancient coven of vampires founded by three vampires named Michael, Christopher and Jamie. The vampires of this coven were very different from the sewer-dwellers of London. They were refined and cultured, and I admired their civility. But Michael, Christopher and Jamie never stopped trying to change my aversion to what they called my “natural food source”, and I never stopped trying to persuade them of the value of my pro-human philosophy. In 1720, after living with them for twenty years, I decided to travel to the New World. I was growing increasingly lonely and longed to find other vampires who believed there was a life for them that didn’t involve murder” said Peter. “We like you just the way you are” said Kristen. “Thankyou Kristen, it was very nice” said Peter.

“What happened when you got here?” asked Kristen. “When I reached America, things didn’t change for me the way I’d hoped. I didn’t find other vampires like me. I was, however, able to begin a career in medicine. I felt that by saving human lives I could compensate in some measure for the existence of vampires” replied Peter. “Sounds like you were the first one” said Kristen. “I was at the time” said Peter.

“I couldn’t risk more than a cordial acquaintance with my co-workers, for the fear of exposing what I was, and my enforced solitude and lack of intimacy pained me. So I began to deliberate creating a companion. However, I was reluctant to steal a life the way mine had been stolen” said Peter. “You must have done because you have a family” said Kristen.

“For decades I debated with myself whether or not it was right to doom another to the life of a vampire. The plea of a dying woman, helped me make my decision. In 1918, I was working nights at the hospital in Chicago as an epidemic of Spanish influenza raged through the city. The woman’s name was Elizabeth Marcus, her husband, Edward, died in the first wave of the epidemic, but Elizabeth and her teenage son, Robert, managed to stay alive for a while longer. I was with Elizabeth on her last night. She begged me to save her son, intuiting that I was more than what I seemed. She died less than an hour later. Her son lay in the room with her, his own death imminent. The goodness and purity in Robert’s face finally convinced me to take action. I bit Robert, effecting his transformation” said Peter. “Does he know about his mother?” asked Kristen. “Yes, he understands why she did it” replied Peter.

“Both me and Robert were surprised to discover Robert’s ability to read minds, but due to my experience with the Italian vampires, I quickly understood the phenomenon” said Peter. “He didn’t know he could do that?” asked Kristen. “No, he didn’t” replied Peter.

“Me and Robert began travelling together, using the cover story that Robert was the younger brother of my late wife. In 1921, we moved to Ashland, Wisconsin. While working in the hospital, I was called to the bedside to the bedside of a young woman grievously injured from a suicide jump. I was surprised to recognize Elizabeth, whom I had treated for a broken leg about ten years earlier. It was almost impossible for me to believe that that vivacious, beautiful girl had come to this tragic end. I knew I could not save her life through conventional methods” said Peter. “You have to do what you did to Robert?” asked Kristen. “Yes” replied Peter.

“Influenced by my memory of the happy girl Elizabeth had been, I bit the dying woman and took her to the home I shared with Robert to wait for the transformation to be complete. When it was over, I apologized for what I had done, but Elizabeth was not unhappy with the situation. She remembered our first meeting, too, and had always considered me her ideal of a gentleman. We soon fell in love and were married” said Peter. “You found your soul mate in Elizabeth” said Kristen. “Yes and I loved her since the first time we met” said Peter, smiling.

“In 1927, Robert left us and came back in 1931. By that time we were in Rochester, New York. I wasn’t expecting the coven to get any bigger, but one night in 1933, while I was on my way to work in the hospital, I discovered the nearly lifeless body of Nikki. Struck by the waste of a beautiful young life, I brought Nikki home and transformed her, hoping in the back of my mind that she would that one day she might be a companion for Robert” said Peter. “But they didn’t, Nikki has Kellan and Robert has me” said Kristen. “And I’m glad he found you” said Peter smiling at her.

“In 1935 we were in Appalachia, Tennessee. Nikki had only reluctantly assimilated to vampire life. The relationship I had hoped would spark between Nikki and Robert hadn’t happened. So when Nikki carried home the dying Kellan to me and begged me to change him, I did as she asked. Nikki wanted a companion of her choosing, and I felt I could make amends to her this way” said Peter. “I think they’re great together” said Kristen. “I’m not sure if Nikki would like to hear that. She stills has trouble dealing with the fact the she is the reason Kellan is a vampire” said Peter.

“In 1936 we moved to Hoquiam, Washington. We were hunting one day when we came across three men from the Quileute rez. They had a strange wolf smell and they was something else about them. Their names were Levi Usher, Timothy Andrews II and Ephraim Brown. Unwilling to harm them, I brokered a treaty with their leader, Ephraim Brown” said Peter. “Billy is friends with Ephraim Brown’s grandson and I’m best friends with his great grandson” said Kristen. “Do you know anyone with the surname Usher or Andrews on the rez?” asked Peter. “No, only Gil and Taylor Brown” replied Kristen.

“We continued to move when necessary, and in Denali, Alaska, I found what I’d been looking for when I set off for America – a coven of vampires who shared my philosophy and drank only animal blood. We all ended up close friends, viewing each other as extended family” said Peter. Kristen smiled.

“During our time in Alaska, we were joined by Ashley and Jackson. Since the family was now quite large, a new cover story was devised. Kellan, Robert and Ashley were now said to be my and Elizabeth’s adopted children. Nikki and Jackson were now said to be siblings and my and Elizabeth’s foster children. And as you already know we moved here two years ago” said Peter. Kristen thought about something. “When Robert disappeared after he first met me, did he go to Alaska?” she asked. “Yeah, he did and they convinced him to come home and try to get to know you without doing anything to harm you” replied Peter.

Chapter Eleven Recovery and the truth about Ashley’s past

Kristen started to open eyes, but everything was out force. “Kristen?” asked a voice. She shut her eyes more tightly and started opening them again. “Baby?” asked the voice. Everything was blurry. “Kristen?” whispered a blurry shape. Everything came into force. She was lying in a hospital bed in a room at Phoenix Hospital. The walls were light blue and the blinds on the windows had been pulled down. There was a flat-screen TV on the wall in front of her and a painting of a ballet studio on the wall at the side. There was a breathing tube plugged into Kristen’s nose and she had been put on a heart monitor. Her wrist and the wound on her leg was bandaged and her leg was in a cast. The voice and the blurry shape turned out to be Sarah. “Mom?” asked Kristen. “Hey” replied Sarah, smiling. She was leaning over her. “Where is he? Where’s... Where’s Robert?” asked Kristen. “He’s asleep” replied Sarah, looking at him. He was sitting on a sofa with his eyes closed. “He never leaves” she said. Kristen looked at him. “And your dad, he’s down at the cafeteria” said Sarah. “What happened?” asked Kristen. “Well, when you fell, you broke your leg, and you lost a lot of blood” replied Sarah. Kristen looked confused. “You don’t remember any of this, do you?” asked Sarah. Kristen shook her head slightly. “Robert came down with his dad to try to convince you come back to Forks. So you went over to their hotel, then you tripped, and you fell down two flights of stairs. Went through a window” said Sarah, getting upset. Kristen knew that wasn’t true. Sarah thought Kristen was trying to remember it. Kristen looked at Robert again. He must have said that was what happened, best to go along with it. She looked back at Sarah. “Yeah, that sounds like me” she said. “Oh, honey, I’m so sorry” said Sarah and stoked Kristen’s hair. A phone vibrated, Sarah pulled her one out and Kristen looked at her. “It’s Ty. He’s so worried about you” said Sarah. Kristen then noticed that Sarah was texting him back. “You’re texting” said Kristen eyeing the phone. Sarah chuckled. “Finally, yeah” she said. She sent the text, put her phone away and tell back to Kristen. “I told him to stay down in Florida” she said. Kristen looked down and closed her eyes for a moment. “Honey, you are gonna love Jacksonville. (Kristen’s eyes popped wide open and she looked around with them). It’s sunny very day, and we found the cutest little house, and you’ve got your own bathroom” said Sarah. “Mom, I still want to live in Forks” said Kristen. “What?” asked Sarah. “I want to live in Forks” replied Kristen. “Well, ok, but we’ll talk about it” said Sarah, stoking Kristen’s hair again. Then Kristen remembered that Sarah had said Billy was here. “Do you mind getting Dad? I have to talk to him. Apologize” she said. “Ok, baby. I’ll go get him” said Sarah. She leaned in and kissed Kristen on the forehead. “And I’ll go get a nurse, ok?” asked Sarah. “Ok” replied Kristen. Sarah went around the bed and walked out the room. Kristen watched her.

After a moment, Kristen looked at Robert, to see that he had his eyes open and he was looking at her. “So what happened? Where’s Cam?” asked Kristen. Robert stood up and walked towards the bed. “We took care of it” he said. He sat down in the chair next to the bed. “And the woman, Rachelle, she ran off” he said. They starred at each other. “I’m alive because of you” said Kristen. “No, you’re in here because of me” said Robert. Kristen looked at him. “The worst part of it was that I thought I wasn’t gonna be able to stop” said Robert. “You did stop” said Kristen. “Kristen, you gotta go to Jacksonville so I can’t hurt you anymore” said Robert. Kristen looked at him and raised her head off the pillow. She was getting upset. “What? Are you... No! No!” she said loudly. Robert just looked at her. “I don’t even know what you’re... How... What are you talking about? (Robert looked down knowing it was upsetting her). You want me to go away? I can’t... No, I can’t... I can’t just leave you...” said Kristen. “I know” said Robert looking at her. Kristen stopped and looked at him. “We can’t be apart. You can’t leave me” she said. Robert leaned forward and took hold of her hand. “I’m here” he said. Kristen calmed down. “Ok, just don’t... You just can’t say stuff like that to me. Ever” she said and leaned back on the pillow. Robert stood up and leaned over her. “Where else am I gonna go?” he asked. He leaned in and kissed her on the forehead. Then he looked down into Kristen’s eyes for a minute.

He pulled away. “I think I can hear Billy” he said. Kristen looked towards the door. “I’ll wait outside, let you be alone with him” said Robert. He walked to the door and held it open for Billy. “I’m letting you have some privacy with her” said Robert. “Alright” said Billy and walked in. Billy’s face was very pale. He took in Kristen on the bed and walked over to her. He sat down on the edge of the bed. “Dad, I’m really sorry” said Kristen. “For what?” asked Billy. “For all the things I said the last time I saw you and for nearly taking myself away from you and Mom forever” replied Kristen, tears welling up in her eyes. “You don’t need to apologize for that, something was bothering you and you needed to get it off your chest” said Billy. Kristen started to cry. “Come here” said Billy and carefully pulled her into a light hug. Kristen hugged him back. From outside the door, Sarah and Robert were watching.

A week later, Kristen was back in Forks. After a talk with both her and Billy, Sarah decided that Kristen should stay in Forks. One afternoon, Kristen was lying in bed, looking out of the window at the grey sky. The bandages were off, but her leg was still in a cast. The wound on her leg had gone, but Cam had left a scar on her wrist. Since leaving hospital, Kristen had not been allowed to walk. Suddenly, from downstairs, there was a knock on the door. Kristen looked at her alarm clock. Peter was coming to take her to Robert’s home later on, but it was far too early for him. Billy opened the door. “Chief Charles. I want to introduce myself. I’m Ashley Simon, Robert’s sister” came Ashley’s voice. “Hi, Ashley” said Billy. “Is it ok if I saw Kristen before Peter got here?” asked Ashley. “Just let me ask her” replied Billy. Kristen could hear Billy coming up the stairs towards her room. The door opened and Billy pecked in. “You heard didn’t you?” he asked. Kristen nodded. “You wanna see her?” asked Billy. Kristen nodded again, smiling this time. “Ashley!” called Billy. Almost at once, Ashley was standing in the doorway. “I’m leave you to it” said Billy and walked downstairs. Ashley closed the door and walked to Kristen’s bed. Kristen sat up and let Ashley sat on the bed. “You saw this didn’t you?” asked Kristen. “How did you guess?” asked Ashley. They smiled at each other. “How are you feeling?” asked Ashley. “I’m ok, just fed up about being carried everywhere. I swear, I’m gonna lose the use of both legs” replied Kristen. Ashley looked away. “What’s wrong?” asked Kristen, noticing. “When Edi came to the house the night we left for Forks, he told Peter some of my history” replied Ashley. “What? I thought he gave us information about Cam and Rachelle?” asked Kristen. “He did that as well. Do you want to hear it?” asked Ashley. Kristen nodded slowly.

“I was born Ashley Baker in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1903, my eyes were brown before it happened and turned at the age of seventeen in 1920” said Ashley. “What happened to your family?” asked Kristen. “My mother died giving birth to me and my father remarried when I was seven” replied Ashley. “What was your life like?” asked Kristen. “Until my father remarried, I was happy, but afterwards, I was miserable” replied Ashley. “Why?” asked Kristen. “My step mother hated me and the visions I had made her jealous. So one night, my father and step mother snatched me from my bed and locked me away in a mental asylum” replied Ashley. “That’s horrible” said Kristen. “In the mental asylum my head was shaved during the threat of a typhoid outbreak. I also had to endure the electroshock therapy. The treatment caused me to lose my memory, but it allowed my naturally cheerful and humorous disposition to return” said Ashley. “That’s doesn’t sound too bad” said Kristen. “Unknown to me, a vampire was working as a groundskeeper at the asylum. This vampire, who was taking advantage of this pool of humans who could die without much notice being taken, formed an attachment to me. He kept me from shock treatments and other horrors whenever he could” said Ashley. “Sounds like he was protecting you” said Kristen. “He learned of my abilities; I always went he was coming to visit me. He would bring hidden objects with him, to see if I could guess what he had. I was always right” said Ashley. “I bet you were” said Kristen, smiling. “Then I had a vision of Cam. It occurred the moment he caught my scent, old and faded. I saw Cam find me. I told my only friend, the vampire, and he knew that what I was seeing was fact. He bit me immediately and took me away to hide me. Knowing this would barely slow Cam, he put himself in Cam’s path to delay him. From my vision, he knew Cam was a strong hunter, and that it was a fight he would not win” said Ashley. “He took that risk to save you” said Kristen. “Just like the one you took to save your mother, before you find out it was a trap” said Ashley, looking at her.

“So what happened?” asked Kristen. “After my transformation, I awoke alone. The pain of the transformation had the same effect on me as the shocks; I remembered nothing of my life in the asylum, or of the vampire who had turned me. I was unaware of Cam as the reason for my change. Fortunately, my psychic gifts were now greatly enhanced and strengthened. I was able to see the best future for myself” replied Ashley.

“The first clear vision I had as a vampires was of Jackson. I knew he was my future mate, but I also knew that he wasn’t ready for me yet. Instead of going to look for him, I waited for him to find me. In the meantime, I practiced – with sporadic success – living a “vegetarian” lifestyle, knowing that in time me and Jackson would end up with the Simon family” said Ashley. Kristen looked at her.

“In 1948, I went to a small diner in Philadelphia where I knew me and Jackson were destined to meet. Though my greeting was characteristically cryptic, Jackson’s ability to feel the emotions of those around him allowed him to appreciate the magnitude of the occasion. I was already in love; Jackson quickly learned to reciprocate” said Ashley. “He loved you the way you loved him?” asked Kristen. “It was love at first sight” replied Ashley, smiling at her.

“To please me, Jackson began practicing a “vegetarian” lifestyle as well. By 1950, when we joined the Simons, I was able to control my thirst as well as the rest of the family did. Jackson continues to have more difficulty with his self-restraint as you already know” Ashley shot Kristen a look.

“How well do you get on with Robert and the others?” asked Kristen. “I love all of my adoptive family, but I have a special bond with Robert. Thanks to his mind-reading abilities, he is the only one who truly understands what it is like to live with constant visions of the future. I came to love Peter as my father, Elizabeth as my mother, Kellan and Robert as my brothers and Nikki as my sister” replied Ashley. “And Jackson as your soul mate?” asked Kristen. “Of course” replied Ashley.

“Why did Edi bring this up?” asked Kristen confused. “It turns out that after Cam had finished with you, he was planning to finish me off as well” replied Ashley. Kristen froze in terror. “When did you learn this?” she asked when she could talk. “As soon as we got back from Phoenix. Peter had been debating whether to tell me. He took me aside and told me. Until you, I was the only one that got away from him” replied Ashley. “Do you think Edi or Rachelle will come back?” asked Kristen. “Rachelle certainly will, but Edi I’m not so sure” replied Ashley. They looked at each other. There was a knock on the front door. Billy opened it. “Kristen, Dr. Simon’s here” he called. “Ok” called Kristen.

Chapter Ten The Fight in the Ballet Studio

Kristen picked up her jacket, put it on and walked down to the reception. She saw that Ashley and Jackson were still at the front desk. She looked over her shoulder and walked outside. Once outside, she got a cab and went to the ballet studio. As it pulled away, Kristen wondered what Ashley and Jackson would do when they found her gone. As the cab drove along, Kristen began thinking about something. “I’d never given much thought to how I would die. But dying in the place of someone I love seems like a good way to go. I can’t bring myself to regret the decisions that brought me face-to-face with death. They also brought me to Robert” she thought. It was dark by the time the cab pulled up outside the ballet studio. She got out and watch the cab drive away. She stood there for a minute and remembered she had her pepper spray in her pocket. She pulled it out and shook it. It was nearly empty, she looked disappointed at it. She stood there for another minute, put it back in her pocket, sucked up her courage and walked in.

She walked into the studio and stood there for a few seconds feeling frightened. She looked around. The only light was the moonlight shining through the high up windows. There was no sign of Cam or Sarah. She walked farther in and then looked behind her. “Kristen? Kristen? Kristen, where are you?” came Sarah’s voice. Kristen looked back around, feeling a little relief. “Mom?” asked Kristen walking forward. “Kristen?” asked Sarah’s voice. “Mom?” asked Kristen breaking into a run. “There you are. What are you doing in here?” asked Sarah’s voice. “Everyone makes fun of me” replied a young child’s voice. Kristen stopped at cupboard at the end. She knew that voice. She pulled open the doors and starred in disbelief. Sarah was on a TV screen with Kristen as a young child. “Come on, you’re a wonderful dancer” said Sarah. “Mom, I suck” said the young Kristen. Suddenly, there was the sound of Cam laughing. “You do not suck” said Sarah. Cam was still laughing, Kristen flinched and whipped around. There was Cam starring at her in three different mirrors. Kristen had no idea where he was.

Just then, Cam came out from standing amongst the mirrors, still laughing and stood in front of Kristen. “That’s my favourite part” said Cam. Kristen froze in horror, realizing that this was a trap. “You were a stubborn child, weren’t you?” asked Cam walking towards her. Cam put his hand on Kristen’s shoulder. “She’s not even here” said Kristen. “No” said Cam, pushed her into one of the doors and pinned her there. “Sorry” he said. He didn’t sound sorry at all. Kristen was getting really frightened now. “You know, but you really made it too easy. So to make things more entertaining, I’m gonna make a little film of our time together” said Cam. He pulled a few inches away and pulled out a camcorder. “I borrowed this from your house. I hope you don’t mind. Good” he said. He turned it on and opened the screen window. “And action” he said pressing the record button. Kristen couldn’t look at the camcorder and she felt both scared and sick. “That’ll break Robert’s little heart” said Cam. Hearing that made Kristen angry. “You have... Robert has nothing to do with this!” she shouted, trying to move forward, but Cam pushed her back. “But he does. His rage will make a more interesting sport than his feeble attempt to protect you” said Cam, getting into Kristen’s face and enjoying that burst of rage. Kristen grew more angry and a plan formed in her head. “And let’s continue” said Cam, stepping back again. Kristen looked down and pulled her pepper spray out of her pocket. She knew it may not work, but she had to try. Without warning, Kristen held the spray up, sprayed it in Cam’s eyes and ran for the door.

The pepper didn’t string or blind him. Cam grew angry. He growled and leapt into the air. Kristen didn’t look behind her as she ran. With a whoosh, Cam flew through the air and landed in front of her. Kristen stopped dead as he landed, blocking her escape. Cam turned to looked at her with anger on his face. Kristen starred at him in horror. Suddenly, Cam grabbed Kristen by the front of her jacket and threw her to the floor. Kristen yelled as he threw her. She dropped the can and slid across the floor into the base of a mirrored pillar, striking her head. She grunted and groaned in pain as her head hit the pillar and clutched her head with her hand. Cam walked towards her holding the camcorder up. “Beautiful. Very visually dynamic” he said. Kristen removed her hand and looked at it. There was blood on her hand. Kristen sat up with her back against the pillar, looking up at Cam. “I chose my stage well” said Cam and bent down to look eye level at Kristen. Kristen looked away and he grabbed her blood strained hand. The blood was driving him mad. “It’s too bad he didn’t have the strength to turn you” he said. Kristen felt angry again. She balled her hand into a fist, pulled it out of Cam’s grip and looked at him. “Instead, he kept you this fragile little human. It’s cruel, really” said Cam. Kristen’s anger disappeared and fear returned. Cam stood up a little, so he was crouching in front of her. Suddenly he stamped down hard on Kristen’s outstretched right leg, breaking it. Kristen screamed in pain, her face captured on the view screen. “Tell Robert how much it hurts” said Cam. Kristen looked away stilling screaming. His foot was pressing down hard, so she couldn’t move. “Tell him to avenge you. Tell him!” said Cam. “No, Robert, don’t!” cried Kristen, still not looking. “Tell him! Tell him!” shouted Cam.

Suddenly, someone smashed into Cam, sending him flying. Cam yelled as he was thrown backwards. Cam landed like a cat and crouched ready to spring. Whoever it was, had crouched down and turned to look at Kristen. It was Robert. Kristen looked at him clutching her broken leg, with pain on her face. Robert starred at her in horror. Kristen was panting and placed her blood strained hand over her mouth. Robert was still looking at her. Cam was on his feet, he growled and came at Robert. He grabbed Robert around the neck, forced him into a mirror and held him there. Kristen at him in horror. “You’re alone ‘cause you’re faster than the others” said Cam. He pulled Robert a few inches forward and then smashed him back into the mirror. The mirror cracked from the impact. “But not stronger” said Cam. Robert grew angry. “I’m strong enough to kill you” he said. With that he pushed away from the mirror and kicked Cam towards the other end of the studio. Cam yelled as he smashed through a mirror and landed on the floor with pieces of mirror glass and the wooden frame on top of him. Quickly Robert ran over to Kristen and crouched down, his hands on her back and under her legs. Kristen an arm behind his neck. “I’m sorry” said Robert, looking into her face. Kristen said nothing, put her other arm behind his neck and held the back of Robert’s jacket with both hands. Robert stood up with Kristen in his arms, just as Cam was getting to his feet. Cam grunted as Robert leapt into the air to get onto the balcony. He grabbed Robert by the ankle and pulled him down. Kristen screamed as they fell. Robert landed face down and Kristen rolled out of his arms into the mass of broken glass. Cam then threw Robert up into the air and he crashed into one of the windows. Robert landed on the window seal. Cam stood there and looked up at him. Then he turned his attention back to Kristen who was lying on her side on the floor. Kristen pulled a piece of glass out of her broken leg. She groaned and looked at the piece of glass and blood strained fingers. She threw the piece of glass away and tried covered the big wound with blood strained hand, sensing Cam walking towards her. Cam walked in front of her, crouched down and grabbed Kristen’s other arm. He looked up at Robert as he pulled the sleeve of Kristen’s jacket a little up. Robert sat up on the window seal, watching. Kristen was now lying flat on her back. She starred at Cam is horror as he brought her arm close to his mouth. Robert, realizing what was going to happen, grew angry and leapt off the window seal.

Too late, Cam bit Kristen’s wrist and she screamed. Robert flew from the window, (Cam stood up), crashed into him and knocked him to the floor, sending them both ploughing through the floorboards and into the base of another mirrored pillar. Kristen gasped and clenched her hand into a fist. Cam had left a bite mark on her wrist and venom was pumping through her body. She grunted and her whole body was shaking like mad. Robert forced Cam into the mirrored pillar and they glared at each for a moment, growling. Robert threw Cam across the studio, but Cam did a front flip and landed on his feet. Cam placed his foot into a mirrored pillar. Robert leapt into the air, Cam leapt towards him and forced Cam into the pillar, breaking all the mirrors. Robert held him there with both hands around his neck. Kristen was looking at them, but her eyes were going in and out of focus so she couldn’t see much. Robert and Cam both growled at each other. Kristen still looking at them. Suddenly, Robert bit into the side of Cam’s neck and spat some skin out of his mouth. Cam yelled in pain. Kristen’s body was still shaking as she looked up at the ceiling. Her blood staining the floor as it poured out from her leg and wrist. She was now gasping rapidly.

Just then, there was a hand on Robert’s shoulder. He turned to see Peter standing next to him. Kellan, Ashley and Jackson jumped down from the balcony. Kellan and Jackson went to Peter, Robert and Cam, while Ashley went to Kristen. Kellan and Jackson grabbed Cam’s arms. Ashley placed her hands on Kristen leg and arm. “Kristen, Kristen, it’s ok” said Ashley, trying to calm her. “Son. (Robert looked him). Enough. Remember who you are” said Peter. Robert looked upset with himself. Kristen yelled and Peter looked at her and then back at Robert. “Kristen, you’re ok” said Ashley. “Kristen needs you” said Peter. “It’s ok. It’s ok. Oh, God” said Ashley. She had placed her hand of the wound of Kristen’s leg and had gotten Kristen’s blood on her hand. She lifted her hand to her face and sniffed it. Fearing she might lose control, she began to panic. “Peter? Her blood” she called. “Your brothers will take care of him” said Peter. “I got him” said Kellan, as he and Jackson pulled Cam away from the others. “Peter!” called Ashley. “Start the fire” said Peter and rushing over to Ashley and Kristen. “Get the floorboards” said Kellan. Jackson let go of Cam and bent down. Cam tried to get back to Kristen, but Kellan held him with both arms. Jackson ripped some of the broken floorboards up. Kellan turned Cam around and Jackson grabbed one of Cam’s arms. “Ashley!” called Jackson. “Ashley, go” said Peter. Ashley stood and went over to Kellan and Jackson. Peter bent over Kristen. Robert walked slowly towards Peter and Kristen. The fire was already lit. Kellan and Jackson held Cam in place and Ashley got ready. Ashley leapt onto Cam’s knees and twisted his head. Kristen saw that, but closed her eyes from the pain. Ashley ripped Cam’s head off and threw it onto the fire. Cam’s body fell down. Kristen closed her eyes again, the pain was getting worse. Robert was still walking towards her. “Her Femoral Artery’s been severed. She’s losing too much blood” said Peter. He had his hands over the wound on Kristen’s leg. “No, no, my head is burning!” cried Kristen through gritted teeth. Robert reached them and fell to his knees. Ashley came back over. They saw the bite mark on Kristen’s wrist. “It’s the venom” said Robert. “You have to make a choice. You can let the change happen” said Peter. Ashley held Kristen’s other arm to the floor. “No. No” said Robert. “It’s gonna happen, Robert. I’ve seen it” said Ashley. “It doesn’t have to be that way” said Robert. “She’s still haemorrhaging. Ashley, make me a tourniquet. Your belt” said Peter. “Peter, what’s my other option?” asked Robert, looking at Kristen. Kristen was gasping. Ashley took off her belt. “Tie it above my hands” said Peter and help Ashley tie it around Kristen’s leg. “Peter!” said Robert. Once the belt was tied tightly around Kristen’s leg, Peter turned to Ashley. “Go” he said. Ashley back over to Kellan and Jackson. Kristen looked over at the fire. Kellan and Jackson were ripping the rest of Cam’s body to pieces and throwing them onto the fire. Kristen looked back at the ceiling. “We could try to suck the venom out” said Peter. “You know I won’t be able to stop” said Robert. “Then find the will to stop. But choose. She only has minutes left” said Peter. Kristen screamed again and Robert looked at her. “I’m gonna make it go away, Kristen” said Robert. Kristen was gasping again. “I’m gonna make it go away” said Robert. Kristen was still shaking as Robert told hold of her arm, lifted it up and placed her wrist in his mouth, sucking the venom out. Kristen was still gasping but she had stopped shaking. Her gasping turned to panting. Robert grunted. Everything was going out of focus before Kristen’s eyes. Suddenly, she grunted loudly. Peter looked up. “Robert, stop. Her blood is clean. You’re killing her” he said. Robert couldn’t stop. “Robert. Stop” said Peter. Kristen eyes were closing. “Stop” said Peter softly. Kristen’s eyes were half closed. “Find the will” said Peter. Kristen eyes closed and everything went black.

Chapter Nine Into Hiding and Cam’s threat

As they drove past the diner, Kristen looked at it to see her friends coming out. Justin had his arm around Christian’s shoulders, Michael had his hand on Anna’s shoulder and Gregory was drinking from a coffee mug. All of them were laughing. Robert looked at her. Kristen looked away and closed her eyes to hold back the tears.

When they reached the Simon house, Robert led Kristen inside. As they came through the front door, they saw Edi coming down the stairs with Peter right behind him. Robert snarled at him. “Wait. He came to warn us about Cam” said Peter. Robert relaxed a little. “This isn’t my fight, and I’ve grown tired of his games, but he’s got unparalleled senses, absolutely lethal. I’ve never seen anything like him in my 300 years. And the woman, Rachelle, don’t underestimate her” said Edi. Robert and Kristen stared at him. Edi took one last look at them and left. Kristen looked at Robert and then down.

Quickly everyone rush into the garage. Peter’s Mercedes, Kellan’s Jeep, Nikki’s BMW, Robert’s Volvo, Ashley’s Porsche and Jackson’s Ducati were parked up. “ I’ve had to fight our kind before. They’re not easy to kill” said Jackson. “But not impossible” said Kellan. He and Jackson opened a cupboard door. “We’ll tear them apart and burn the pieces” said Kellan. Bags with being place in the Mercedes, the Jeep and BMW. Robert was keeping Kristen really close to him. “I don’t relish the thought of killing another creature, even a sadistic one like Cam” said Peter. Nikki sat on the counter. “What if he kills one of us first?” she asked. “I’m gonna run Kristen south. Can you lead Cam away from here?” asked Robert. Peter, Ashley and Jackson looked at him. “No, Robert. Cam knows you’ll never leave Kristen. He’ll follow you” said Peter. “I’ll go with Kristen. Jackson and I will drive her south” said Ashley. Robert and Kristen looked at her in horror. “I’ll keep her safe, Robert” said Ashley taking a step towards them. Kristen looked at Robert, but Robert was looking at Ashley. “Can you keep our thoughts to yourself?” asked Robert. “Yes” replied Ashley. She took Kristen by the arm and led her towards the Mercedes. Jackson had already gotten in the driver’s seat. Ashley got her in the back and got in the front. “Nikki, Elizabeth, could you put these on so Cam will pick up Kristen’s scent?” asked Robert. He threw one of Kristen’s jackets at Elizabeth. When he tossed Kristen’s coat to Nikki, she looked angry. “Why? What is she to me?” she asked jumping off the counter to glare at Robert, leaving the coat on the counter. Robert stared at her in disbelief. Kristen looked over from the car. Peter stepped towards them. “Nikki, Kristen is with Robert. She’s part of this family now, (he picked up the coat), and we protect our family” he said holding the coat out. After a minute, Nikki took the coat from Peter. Peter walked towards Elizabeth in the BWM, Nikki walked to the jeep with Kellan behind her and Robert walked to the Mercedes. Nikki threw the coat into the front passenger seat of the Jeep, while Robert closed the boot of the Mercedes. With the boot closed, Robert went to Kristen’s window and bent down to talk to her. He could tell that she was very frightened and worried. “Oh, God. If anything... What if... If anything happens, I swear to God...” said Kristen. “Nothing’s gonna happen. There’s seven of us, and there’s two of them, and when everything is done, I’m gonna come back and get you” said Robert. “Yeah” said Kristen, but she didn’t relax. “Kristen, you are my life now” said Robert. The sound of the garage doors opening was heard and the engines of the Mercedes and the BMW started. Robert looked into Kristen’s eyes and put his hand on her cheek. Kristen starred into Robert’s face, worried that she would never see him again. Robert let go of the side and watched as the Mercedes and the BWM sped away into the night.

The Mercedes sped out of Forks and along the main road south. Kristen held her mobile to her ear, looking out of the window. “Hey, Mom. It’s me again. You must let your phone die or something. I’m not in Forks, but everything’s ok, and I’ll explain it later” she said and hung up. The sky soon turned lighter and soon the grey cloudy sky of the North turned to the blue sunny sky of the South. Ashley looked at Jackson and they held hands. Kristen looked at them. They drove through California into Arizona. Once in Phoenix, they kept driving looking for somewhere to stay. They placed into a hotel parking lot and checked in.

It was late afternoon now, Ashley, Jackson and Kristen were sitting in their hotel room with all the curtains closed. Kristen had changed into clean clothes sitting on a stool with her mobile in her hand. Ashley and Jackson were sitting on the sofa. Suddenly Ashley gasped and her eyes went unforced. Jackson and Kristen turned to look at her. “What is it? What do you see?” asked Jackson. For a moment no one spoke. “Cam, he just changed course” replied Ashley. Kristen stood up and walked over to them. “Where will it take him, Ashley?” asked Jackson. “Mirrors. A room full of mirrors” replied Ashley, still seeing the vision. Jackson put a piece of paper in front of her and placed a pencil in her hand. Kristen stood in front of the coffee table looking confused. Ashley was sketching without looking at the piece of paper. “Robert said the visions weren’t always certain” said Kristen. “She sees the course people on while they’re on it. If they change their minds, the vision changes” said Jackson. The drawing had come along, but Ashley still didn’t look at it. “Ok, so the course that Cam’s on now is gonna lead him to a ballet studio?” asked Kristen recognizing the room. Jackson looked at her, Ashley snapped out of it and also looked at her. “You’ve been here?” asked Ashley. “I took lessons as a kid. The school I went to had an arch just like that” replied Kristen pointing at the drawing. “Was your school here in Phoenix?” asked Jackson. Ashley looked at him. “Yeah” replied Kristen, brushing her finger tips along her forehead. Kristen’s mobile vibrated. She looked down at and hurried to answer it. She turned her back on Ashley and Jackson, but she could feel their eyes on her back. “Robert, are you ok?” she asked. “We’ve lost Cam. Rachelle’s still in the area” replied Robert. Kristen looked worried. “Nikki and Elizabeth are going back to Forks to protect your father. I’m coming to get you. Then you and I are gonna go somewhere alone. And the others will keeping hunting. I’ll do whatever it takes to make you safe again” said Robert.

Later in the early evening, while Ashley and Jackson were down in the reception, Kristen was packing again. While, she was packing her mobile vibrated again. She looked down and saw it was the home phone in Phoenix. She answered it. “Hey, Mom, I’m glad you got my message. What are you doing home?” she asked. “Kristen? Kristen? Kristen, where are you?” asked Sarah panicking. “Calm down, everything’s fine” replied Kristen. “Kristen? Kristen?” asked Sarah, still panicking. “I’ll explain everything later” replied Kristen. A strange noise was heard on Sarah’s end. “Mom, are you there?” she asked. “Forks High School doesn’t protect its students’ privacy very well. It was just too easy for Rachelle to find your previous address” said Cam. Kristen froze and listened in horror. “It’s a nice house you have here. I was prepared to wait for you, but then Mom came home after she received a very worried call from your dad, and it worked out quite well” said Cam. “Wait, wait...” said Sarah. “Don’t touch her! Don’t...” cried Kristen. “You can still save her” said Cam. “Don’t!” cried Kristen while he had been talking. She froze again, knowing there was a way to save her. “But you’re gonna have to get away from your friends. Can you handle that?” asked Cam. “Where should I meet you?” asked Kristen. “How about your old ballet studio?” replied Cam. Kristen remembered Ashley’s vision. “And I’ll know if you bring anyone along. Poor Mommy would pay the price for that mistake” said Cam.

Chapter Eight The Chase Begins

That did it. Robert pushed Kristen back and crouched to face Cam, snarling. The others rushed back. Peter crouched down, trying to keep Robert back. Kellan, Nikki, Ashley and Jackson crouched down to stop Cam from springing. Elizabeth got in front of Kristen protecting her. “A human?” asked Edi, as he and Rachelle rushed back. Rachelle crouched down as if to help Cam. Edi didn’t crouch far down as Cam and Rachelle. Looking around and spotted Kristen. Kristen was terrified. Both Robert and Cam didn’t relax. Cam was staring at Robert and then over him at Kristen. “The girl is with us. I think it best if you leave” said Peter. Rachelle was staring at Kristen as well. No one relaxed their position. Kristen was getting very frightened now. “I can see the game is over. We’ll go now” said Edi and started to back away with his hands up. Robert and Cam still didn’t relax. “Cam” said Edi, looking at him and still backing away. Cam stood up, looked at Kristen and started to turn away. Rachelle stood up with a hiss. Cam took another look at Kristen as he put his arm around Rachelle’s shoulders. Edi turned around and the three of them walked away, disappearing into the woods.

Once they had gone, Peter, Kellan, Nikki, Robert, Ashley and Jackson stood up. Robert looked like something was very wrong. “Get Kristen out of here. Go” said Peter and turned Robert around. Elizabeth went to stand next to Peter. Kristen looked into Robert’s eyes frightened. Robert took Kristen by the arm and they hurried towards the jeep. Once at the jeep, Robert opened the passenger door, got Kristen inside and tried to put her belt on. Kristen grabbed it and did it herself. “Ok, I’ve got it! I’ve got it! I’m all right!” cried Kristen. Robert shut the door and hurried to the driver’s door. As he climbed in, Kristen removed his cap and looked at him horrified. Robert started the engine up. “What, now he’s coming after me?” asked Kristen. The jeep sped into the woods towards the town. As they raced along either of them spoke for a while. “Listen to me. Cam is a tracker. The hunt is his obsession. I read his mind. My reaction on the field set him off. I just made this his most exciting game ever. He’s never gonna stop” said Robert in a loud voice. “What should we do?” asked Kristen. “We have to kill him. Rip him apart and burn the pieces” replied Robert. Kristen suddenly realized that she didn’t know where they were going. “Where we going?” she asked getting frightened. “Away from Forks. We’ll get a ferry to Vancouver” replied Robert. “I have to go home. Now. You have to take me home” said Kristen. “You can’t go home. He’s gonna trace your scent there. It’s the first place he’s gonna look” said Robert. Kristen suddenly remembered Billy. “But my dad is there. We...” said Kristen. “It doesn’t matter!” said Robert. Kristen couldn’t believe he just said that. “Yes, it does! He could get killed because of us!” she said, getting angry. “Just let me get you out of here first, all right?” asked Robert. “It’s my dad! We have to go back! We’ll figure a way to lead Cam away somehow. I don’t know. But we have to do something” replied Kristen. Robert thought about it. Somewhere behind them, Cam was following at a run.

Billy was lying with his eyes closed on the sofa. Kristen came through the front door angry. Billy opened his eyes and looked up. “Robert, I said leave me alone” shouted Kristen. “Kristen, don’t do this, please” begged Robert. “It’s over! Get out!” shouted Kristen slamming the door and rushing upstairs. Billy jumped off the sofa and followed her. “Hey, hey, hey, hey. Kristen? What’s going on?” he asked. “I just gotta get out of here. I’m leaving now” replied Kristen, slamming her bedroom door shut. Robert was already there. He had a bag out for her piling clothes in. “Hey” whispered Kristen, coming to the bed and throwing her coat in. There was a knock on the door. “Kristen?” called Billy. “What am I gonna say to him? I can’t hurt him” said Kristen. “Kristen, what’s going on?” called Billy. “You just have to” said Robert. She looked at him. “I’ll be down at the truck” said Robert. Kristen nodded and Robert disappeared. She picked up a small bag, opened the door and walked passed him into the bathroom. “Did he hurt you?” asked Billy. Kristen went to the bathroom cupboard and started to put her things into the bag. “No” she replied. “Break up with you or something?” asked Billy. She closed the cupboard and walked back to her room. “No, I broke up with him” she said and shut the door in Billy’s face. “I thought you liked him” said Billy. Kristen opened the door again and went back to the bathroom. “Yeah, that’s why I have to leave. I don’t want this. I have to go home” she said. Billy was confused. “Home? Your... Your mum’s not even in Phoenix” he said. “She’ll come home. I’ll call her from the road” said Kristen. She went to her room, picked up her bags and went downstairs. Billy followed her. “You’re not gonna drive home right now. You can sleep on it. If you still feel like going in the morning, I’ll take you to the airport” he said. “No. I want to drive. It’ll give me more time to think. I mean, if I get really tried, I’ll pull into a motel. I promise” said Kristen going into the kitchen. “Look, Kristen, I know I’m not that much fun to be around, but I can change that. We can do more stuff together” said Billy. Kristen looked at him and knew she have to hurt him. “Like what? Like watch baseball on the flat-screen? Eat at the diner every night? Steak and cobbler? Dad, that’s you. That’s not me” she said. She walked past him to the front door and Billy followed. “Kristen, come on, I just... I just got you back” said Billy. Kristen froze, knowing she had to hurt him more. “Yeah, and, you know, if I don’t get out now, then I’m gonna be stuck here like Mom” she said. That did it. Billy froze. Kristen opened the door, walked out and slammed it behind her.

At the truck, Kristen threw her suitcase into the back and got in. The truck started up and backed out. Cam had been watching and listening from behind a tree. The truck drove away and Kristen was holding back tears. Suddenly, there was a bang on her door, she jumped and looked over. It was only Robert. “Your father’s gonna forgive you” he said. Quickly Kristen turned back to the road. “Why don’t you let me drive?” asked Robert, opening the door. Kristen moved over, keeping her hands on the wheel until Robert was in. “He won’t. You should’ve seen his face. I told him the same thing that my mom told him when she was leaving him” she said, the tears were coming. “It’s the only way he’d let you go” said Robert. Kristen shook her head and closed her eyes for a minute. “Just don’t worry about him now. He’s safe. Cam’s following us” said Robert. Kristen looked at him. A loud bang made Kristen jump and look behind them, gasping. “Oh, God” said Kristen looking at him. “It’s just Kellan” said Robert. Kristen looked back just in time to see Kellan jumping into the back. “Ashley is in the car behind us” said Robert. Kristen looked back to see Kellan’s jeep was right behind them.

Chapter Seven Baseball and Meeting another Coven

The next day after school, Kristen drove to the diner to met Billy for dinner. As she parked up, she saw Michael standing outside with some friends from the basketball team. He looked over at Kristen as she parked up. “Arizona. Yo, what’s happening?” he asked. Kristen got out and walked towards the entrance. “So you and Simon, huh? That’s... I don’t like it” said Michael. Kristen stopped and looked at him. “I mean, I don’t know, he just looks at you like you’re something to eat” said Michael. Kristen turned away and went inside.

She found Billy sitting at the same table, reading the newspaper. Billy looked up as she came in. “Hey, sorry I’m late. Biology project” said Kristen sitting down. “I ordered you the spinach salad. I hope that’s ok” said Billy folding the paper up as Ayanna brought their food over (Billy was having steak again). “You should order one for yourself next time. Cut back on the steak” said Kristen. “Hey, I’m as healthy as a horse” said Billy and banged the paper down on the table. Ayanna was still standing at the table. Billy and Kristen looked up at her. “Say, Chief, boys want to know, did you find anything down by Queets River today?” she asked. Everyone in the diner looked at Billy, even Kristen. There was a pause. “Yeah, we found a bare human footprint, but it looks like whoever that is, is headed east, so Kitsap County sheriff is gonna take over from here” said Billy. “Ok” said Ayanna. “Ok?” asked Billy. “I just hope they catch him fast” replied Ayanna and walked away. Everyone looked away and went back to their business. Billy looked out the window to see Michael acting silly in front of a bush, with his back towards them. “Looks like your friends are flagging you” he said to Kristen. Kristen took a bite of lettuce and looked out the window at Michael. Kristen looked away from the window embarrassed. “It’s ok if you wanna go join them. I’m just gonna turn in early anyway” said Billy. “Me, too” said Kristen. “Kristen, it’s Friday night. Go out. Looks like the Stephens’s boy got a big smile for you” said Billy. “Yeah, he’s a good buddy” said Kristen. “What about any of these other yahoos in town? Anybody interest you?” asked Billy. Kristen looked at him. “Dad, we gonna talk about boys?” she asked and smiled. “Yeah, I guess not. I just feel like I leave you alone too much. You should be around people” replied Billy, looking out the window again. “I don’t really mind being alone. I guess I’m kind of like my dad in that way” said Kristen. Billy looked at her, looked down to cut his steak and shot another look at Kristen.

That night, Kristen was lying on her bed, with her phone to her ear. It was a phone call from Sarah. “So, how’s all the baseball stuff going?” asked Kristen. “Ty’s working so hard. You know, spring training. We’re looking for a house to rent in case things become more permanent. You’d like Jacksonville, baby” replied Sarah. “Yeah? I’m really liking Forks” said Kristen. “What?” asked Sarah. “Forks is growing on me” replied Kristen. “Could a guy have anything to do with that?” asked Sarah. “Well, yeah” replied Kristen smiling. “I knew it. Tell me everything. What is he? Jock? Indie? I bet his smart. Is he smart?” asked Sarah. There was a point of pressure at the end of Kristen’s bed, she flinched and looked over to see Robert sitting on the end of her bed. She looked at him and held the phone closer to her mouth. “Mom, can I talk to you later?” she asked quickly. “Come on, we gotta talk boys. Are you being safe?” asked Sarah. Kristen hung up embarrassed, put the phone on the bedside table and slid down the bed to sit in front of Robert. They stared into each other’s eyes. “How did you get in here?” asked Kristen. “The window” replied Robert smiling. “Do you do that a lot?” asked Kristen. “Well, just the past couple of weeks” replied Robert. Kristen said nothing. “I like watching you sleep. It’s kind of fascinating to me” said Robert. Kristen still said nothing. “I always wanted to try one thing. Just stay very still” said Robert. Robert leaned slowly towards her. Kristen moved a little. “Don’t move” said Robert. They both closed their eyes, as Robert leaned farther in. They kissed. Kristen gasped softly. They kissed again. Kristen sat up so she was on her knees and grabbed his hair with both hands. Robert grunted softly. They both apart a few seconds later. Robert pushed Kristen back down on the bed and he was on top of her. They were both panting. They kissed again. “Stop it!” said Robert and jerked violently away. He hit the wall, but didn’t fall down. Kristen sat up and looked at him shocked. “I’m sorry” she said quickly. They looked at each other. “I’m stronger than I thought” said Robert. “Yeah, I wish I could say the same” said Kristen. Robert looked hurt and turned away. “I can’t ever lose control with you” he said. He stood there, looking out the window. “Hey, don’t go” said Kristen. He turned back, looked at her for a moment and walked towards her. They sat on the bed talking about stuff until Kristen fell asleep. Robert lying next to her, watching as she slept. Robert very lightly touched her cheek with his knuckles. He pulled his hand away as she moved her head. She placed her head on his chest and curled up to him placing her arm on him. Robert just watched her.

The next evening, thunder rumbled through the mountains. Kellan’s was parked outside Kristen’s house. Billy and Kristen were in the kitchen. Billy was sitting at the table cleaning a shotgun, a hunting rifle laid next to it. Kristen had her hair tied back into a ponytail. “Hey, got you another one” said Kristen placing a can of beer on the table. “Thanks” said Billy looking at her. Kristen leaned over the table to talk to him. “I have a date with Robert Simon” she said. There was a pause. “He’s a little old for you, isn’t he?” asked Billy. “No. He’s a junior. I’m a junior. I thought you liked the Simons” replied Kristen. “I thought you didn’t like any of the boys in town” said Billy and took a drink from the open can of beer. “Robert doesn’t live in town. Technically” said Kristen. Billy looked at her, put the can down and went back to his shotgun. “He’s right outside” said Kristen. Billy looked at Kristen and then at the front door. “He is?” he asked. “Yeah, he wanted to met you, officially” replied Kristen. There was another pause. “All right. (The shotgun whipped back, Kristen flinched back). Bring him in” said Billy. He laid it on the table. “Could you be nice? He’s important” said Kristen. Billy drew invisible halo around his head. Kristen looked at him and went to the front door. As soon as Kristen and Robert appeared, Billy stood up and walked towards them. “Chief Charles. I want to formally introduce myself. I’m Robert Simon” said Robert holding out his hand. Billy shook it. “Hi, Robert” he said. “Kristen won’t be out too late tonight. She’s just gonna play baseball with my family” said Robert. “Baseball?” asked Billy with a blank expression. “Yes, sir, that’s the plan” replied Robert. Billy looked at him and chuckled. “Kristen’s gonna play baseball. (He starched the side of his neck). Well, good luck with that” he said. “I’ll take good care of her. I promise” said Robert. Robert and Kristen walked towards the front door. “Hey” said Billy. Kristen stopped and looked at him. “Still got that pepper spray?” asked Billy. “Yeah, Dad” replied Kristen whispering. She walked out picking up her coat on the way. Billy walked into the living room and watched.

Outside, Robert and Kristen were standing next to Kellan’s jeep. Robert explained that Kellan let him borrow it. “And since when do vampires like baseball?” asked Kristen, as Robert put his baseball cap on her head. “Well, it’s the American pastime, (he moved a piece of her hair out of her eye), and there’s a thunderstorm coming” replied Robert. Kristen looked at him confused. “It’s the only time we can play. You’ll see why” said Robert.

It was breathtaking in the mountains. The baseball was close to a huge waterfall. By the time Robert and Kristen got there, the others had finished setting the field up. They got out and walked towards them. Peter and Nikki were placing their hands over the bat, Peter tried to cheat by putting his hand on top of Nikki’s. Nikki smiled and knocked his hand away. Kristen looked up to see Elizabeth walking towards them. “Hey” said Kristen and smiled. “Glad you’re here. We need an umpire” said Elizabeth, taking Kristen by the arm and leading her away from Robert. “She thinks we cheat” said Kellan. “I know you cheat” said Elizabeth looking at Kellan. They stopped and Elizabeth put an arm around Kristen’s shoulders, looking at her. “Call them as you see them, Kristen” said Elizabeth. “Ok” said Kristen smiling.

Everyone was getting ready to play. Kellan and Robert were fielding, Ashley was pitching, Nikki was batting, Peter and Jackson were batters, Elizabeth was catching and Kristen was the umpire. A flash of lighting and clap of thunder above made Ashley look up. “It’s time” she said looking down. Nikki and Elizabeth were ready, but Kristen was still confused. Ashley threw the ball and Nikki hit it. The ball collided with the bat as a crack of thunder was heard. Nikki dropped the bat and ran. Now Kristen understood. “Ok, now I see why you need the thunder” she said. The ball flew into the trees and Robert chased after it. Nikki was running like mad. “That’s gotta a home run, right?” asked Kristen. Elizabeth wasn’t sure. “Robert’s very fast” she said. Nikki was at third base, when the ball came flying out of the trees towards Elizabeth. “Come home, Nikki!” called Peter. Elizabeth caught the ball and looked at Nikki, smiling. Kristen crouched down to get a good look at this. Nikki slid to home base, just as Elizabeth tagged her. They both looked at Kristen. “You’re out” said Kristen. “Out!” called Kellan. Elizabeth stood up, Nikki glared at Kellan. “Babe, come on. It’s just a game” called Kellan. As Kristen stood up, Nikki was getting up and the same time and glared at her. Nikki walked past her still glaring. Kristen looked at Elizabeth and made the “what” arm jester. Elizabeth smiled at her. “Nice kitty” said Peter, patted her shoulder and went to bat. Robert had seen what had happened, shook his head, smiled and walked back to his position.

It was Peter’s turn, he did a Babe Ruth move and got ready to bat. Everyone was ready. Ashley threw the ball and Peter hit it. The ball went high, right over Ashley’s head. Peter dropped the bat and ran. The ball was in between Kellan and Robert. They jumped for it at the same and collided with each other in mid air. The sound of the impact was covered by the sound of thunder. Peter slide onto second base, just as Kellan and Robert hit the ground. They were laughing. “What are you doing?” asked Robert and stuck a finger up at him. Kellan pushed him and Robert was still laughing.

Now it was Jackson’s turn. He swung the ball around a bit before showing he was ready. Ashley threw the ball and Jackson hit it. The ball went straight for Kellan. Jackson dropped the bat and ran. Kellan ran, jumped into a tree, climbed farther up it, jumped out, caught the ball and threw it back to Ashley. “My monkey man” said Nikki to Elizabeth.

Nikki was up again. Ashley threw the ball as hard as she could. Nikki hit the ball even harder. The swing made Elizabeth’s hair blow back. The ball headed into the woods again. Elizabeth and Kristen stood up just as Nikki starting running. Something was wrong with Ashley. Her eyes were unforced for a minute. Suddenly, she looked behind her looking worried. Thunder rumbled in the mountains. “Stop!” she called. Kellan looked round and Robert froze. He looked towards the woods and then turned slowly away. Without warning, Peter, Kellan, Nikki, Robert and Ashley ran towards Elizabeth, Jackson and Kristen. Elizabeth was shielding Kristen and Jackson moved quickly towards Peter, Kellan, Nikki, Robert and Ashley. Kristen knew that something bad was coming their way. “They were leaving. Then they heard us” said Ashley to Robert. Robert went straight past Elizabeth, took Kristen by the arm and turned her towards the jeep. Kristen looked at him. “Let’s go” said Robert. “It’s too late” said Peter, looking at them. Robert thought for a moment. “Get your hair down” he told Kristen. Kristen pulled the hair bow out and pulled her hair in front of her. Nikki looked at her. “Like that’ll help. I could smell her across the field” she said nastily.

Everyone (expect Robert and Kristen) moved forward. Out of the mist, three figures came walking very fast towards them. “I shouldn’t have brought you here. I’m so sorry” said Robert. “What? What are you...” asked Kristen. “Just be quiet and stand behind me” replied Robert. They walked slowly towards the others. Thunder rumbled again. They stopped with space in between. Robert and Kristen got on the end of the line. Now Kristen could get a closer look at the strangers. The one of the left looked like a twenty-six year old man. He had long blond hair tied back to a ponytail, stubble and bright red eyes. The one in the middle also looked a like a twenty-six year old man. He had dark skin, long black hair in dreadlocks, a beard, a moustache, stubble and bright red eyes. The one on the right looked like a twenty-six year old woman. She had long wavy red hair and bright red eyes. Kristen could tell by their eyes that they were Vampires, but different from Robert and his family. Kristen was horrified when she saw that the man on the left had a security guard badge from Grisham Mill pinned to his jeans and he was wearing Ned’s jacket and the woman was wearing Ned’s “Kiss me I’m Irish” T-Shirt.

The man in the middle smiled and held up a baseball. “I believe this belongs to you” he said and tossed it towards them. Peter caught it and smiled. “Thankyou” he said. “I am Edi. And this is Rachelle and Cam” said the man in the middle. “I’m Peter. This is my family. Elizabeth, Kellan, Nikki, Robert, Ashley, Jackson and Kristen” said Peter looking around. Kristen felt a little weird about be named as a member of the family, but she didn’t say anything. “Hello” said Edi. “I’m afraid your hunting activities have caused something of a mess for us” said Peter. Edi looked shocked. “Our apologies. We didn’t realize the territory had been claimed” he said. Rachelle looked at him. “Yes, well, we maintain a permanent residence nearby” said Peter. Edi and Rachelle looked at Cam. “Really?” asked Edi. Cam was staring at Robert, Kristen and the others. “Well, we won’t be a problem anymore. We were just passing through” said Edi, turning back to Peter. Rachelle also looked at Peter. “The humans were tracking us, but we led them east. You should be safe” she said. “Excellent” said Peter. There was a short pause. “So, could you use three more players?” asked Edi. Ashley and Nikki looked at Peter. Peter thought about it. “Come on. Just one game” said Edi. Peter shot a quick look at Robert. “Sure. Why not? A few of us were leaving. You could take their place. We’ll bat first” said Peter and tossed the ball to Edi, but Rachelle caught it. “I’m the one with the wicked curveball” she said. “Well, I think we can handle that” said Jackson, Kellan smiled. Edi and Rachelle smiled, Edi clapped his hands. Robert’s family smiled and started to turn away. “We shall see” said Rachelle, looking at Edi.

Edi and Rachelle turned away, but Cam stayed where he was. He was staring at Robert and Kristen. Kristen was looking at Robert while Robert was looking at Cam. There was a curios expression on his face. Robert gave him a hard look and he started to turn away. Just then, a gust of wind blew. It whistled softly. Kristen hair blew towards Cam as she turned away. Cam titled his head back, closed his eyes and sniffed. He opened his eyes and looked at them with a different expression on his face. “You brought a snack” he said and crouched forward.

Chapter Six Robert’s past and Robert takes Kristen to meet his family

The next day after school, Kristen stood in the school grounds searching for him. After a minute she spotted him. He was alone, he stopped and look at her with a seriously look on his face. Kristen’s face harden up a little and she walked towards him. Robert just stood there. Kristen shot him a look as she walked past him. Robert turned and watched her for a moment before following her. They walked towards the woods near the school.

Kristen walked deeper into the woods. She could feel Robert following, but she didn’t stop to look. When she was sure that they were deep enough, she threw down her rucksack, took a few more steps and stopped. Her breathing was trembling. Robert was walking slowly up behind her. “You’re impossibly fast and strong. Your skin is pale white and ice-cold. Your eyes change colour. And sometimes you speak like you’re from a different time. You never eat or drink anything. You don’t go out in the sunlight” said Kristen. Robert was now standing a few inches behind her. Kristen gasped quietly. “How old are you?” she asked. “Seventeen” replied Robert. “How long have you been 17?” asked Kristen. “A while” replied Robert. For a moment either of them spoke. “I know what you are” said Kristen. “Say it. Out loud. Say it” said Robert. Kristen couldn’t speak for a minute. “Vampire” she finally said. She began to feel very frightened now. Wondering what he would do to her now she knew. “Are you afraid?” asked Robert. She let out a trembling breath. Kristen controlled herself before turning to face him. “No” she said and shook her head. Robert looked at her. “Then ask me the most basic question. What do we eat?” he said. Kristen just looked at him. “You won’t hurt me” she said. Robert’s face harden, he grabbed Kristen by the arm and lead her away. “Where we going?” asked Kristen. “Up the mountain. Out of the cloud bank. You need to see what I look like in the sunlight” replied Robert. They stopped at the base of the mountain. Without warning, Robert flung Kristen onto his back and ran up the mountain in lighting speed. Kristen just held on for dear life.

Robert didn’t slow until they were so distance up. As they came to a patch of sunlight shining down, Robert dropped Kristen and walked towards it. Kristen panted as he let go of her. She watched him walked towards the ray of sunlight. “This is why we don’t show ourselves in sunlight. People would know we’re different” said Robert, it looked like he was unbuttoning his shirt. Kristen just stood there, watching. Robert in the sunlight and to Kristen it looked like nothing happened. He turned to face her. “This is what I am” he said. His skin was sparkling. Kristen was speechless as she took in what she was seeing and gasped. “It’s like diamonds” she said. Robert looked at her. “You’re beautiful” said Kristen. Robert disagreed and made a face. “Beautiful? This is the skin of a killer, Kristen” he said. He turned away doing his shirt up. Kristen watched him. Robert went into the trees on the left and Kristen followed him.

They walked down a sloop. “I’m a killer” said Robert turning to Kristen. “I don’t believe that” said Kristen still following him. She slipped on a bit of earth, but didn’t fall down. “That’s because you believe the lie. It’s camouflage” said Robert. He stopped and turned to face her. “I’m the world’s most dangerous predator. Everything about me invites you in, my voice, my face, even my smell. As if I would need any of that” he said getting angry. With a loud whooshing, he had run off. Kristen starred after him. She looked up and he came into view on a huge boulder size rock, jumping out of a tree. “As if you can outrun me!” Robert shouted. Kristen starred at him in shock. Suddenly he jumped off and was gone again. Two more whooshes sent Kristen looking around, but she couldn’t see him. The fourth whoosh was right behind her, she turned to see him standing a few feet behind her. “As if you could fight me off” he said angrily. He grabbed a tree root, pulled it off and threw it across the space. It smashed into a rock, but didn’t break. Kristen felt very frightened now and looked back at him. “I’m designed to kill” said Robert quietly now. Kristen pushed her fear back. “I don’t care” she said. Robert starred at her in disbelief. “I’ve killed people before” he said. “It does not matter” said Kristen. Robert was having trouble holding something back. “I wanted to kill you. I’ve never wanted a human’s blood so much in my life” he said. “I trust you” said Kristen. Robert leaned forward and touched her cheek with his fingertips. “Don’t” he said. “I’m here. I trust you” said Kristen. She moved to quickly and with a whoosh, he was gone again. Kristen looked around searching. She looked up and found him up a tree, crouching down, a few feet above her. “My family, we’re different from others of our kind. We only hunt animals. We’ve learned to control our thirst. (He leaned over her). But it’s you, your scent, it’s like a drug to me. You’re like my own personal brand of heroin” said Robert. With another whoosh, he was now lower down, so Kristen could almost touch him. Kristen walked over and Robert crouched farther down. They stared into each other’s eyes. “Why did you hate me so much when we met?” asked Kristen. “I did. Only for making me want you so badly. I still don’t know if I can control myself” replied Robert. Kristen reached up and grabbed one of the branches. “I know you can” she said, pulling herself up into the tree. They starred at each other for a few seconds before Robert jumped down and walked away. He stopped by three huge moss covered boulder sized rocks. Kristen was following him. “I can’t read your mind” said Robert. He turned to face her and held out his arms. He had Kristen with her back against one of the rocks with his arms on either side, blocking her. “You have to tell me what you’re thinking” he said. “Now I’m afraid” she said after a pause. Robert lowered an arm. “Good” he said, lowering his other arm and backing away. Kristen came right up to him. “I’m not afraid of you. I’m only afraid of losing you. I feel like you’re gonna disappear” she said. Robert looked right into her eyes. There was a longer pause. “You don’t know how long I’ve waited for you” said Robert. He put his hand on Kristen’s chest. “So the lion fell in love with the lamb” he said. “What a stupid lamb” said Kristen. “What a sick, masochistic lion” said Robert, smiling a little. For a long while, they looked straight into each other’s eyes.

Moments later, Robert took Kristen to a place where he went on sunny days. It was a meadow. There were white and purple wild flowers growing everywhere. They sat down on the grass and talked. After awhile, Kristen laid back and Robert laid down next to her. They stared into each other’s eyes for a long moment. They both looked up as the sun broke through the clouds, lighting up the meadow. Robert’s skin was shining like diamonds again. They looked back at each other and stayed like that for hours.

The next day, Kristen was laying on her bed thinking about yesterday afternoon. “About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Robert was a vampire. (She sat up). Second, there was a part of him, and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be, that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him” she thought. As she sat there, a horn honked twice. She got up and walked to the window. She looked down to see Robert standing next to his car waiting for her. Kristen shock her head slightly, smiled and went to get her jacket and rucksack.

At school, Justin was handing out flyers for the dance in the parking lot. “Monte Carlo? That’s our dance theme?” asked Anna. “Gambling, tuxedos and Bond, James Bond” replied Justin, still handing them out. Christian held her camera up and the sound of an engine purring made her turn around. She lowered it with a surprised look on her face. “Oh, my God” she said smiling. Robert was walking to the front passage side door. He opened it and Kristen stepped out. She looked very nervous as they walked. “Wow. (She cleared her throat). You know, everybody’s staring” she said. Justin, Christian and Anna moved back, Justin looked like he couldn’t believe his eyes while Christian and Anna were smiling. “Not that guy. (He pointed out). No, he just looked. (He looked over at someone or something). I’m breaking all the rules now anyway. (Kristen looked up at him). Since I’m going to hell” said Robert. He put his arm around Kristen’s shoulder, looked over at his family, smiled and walked away with Kristen. His family had been standing next to Nikki’s BMW and looked annoyed at their brother’s behaviour.

The next day after school, Robert took Kristen to one of the rivers. As they walked, they talked. “So, does a person have to be dying to become like you?” asked Kristen. “No, that’s just Peter. He’d never do this to someone who had another choice” replied Robert. “So, is Peter, like, the eldest one?” asked Kristen. “Yeah. He’s been like this since 1663” replied Robert. They stood on the edge of the river. “What about you? When were you born?” asked Kristen. Robert looked at the river and took a deep breath. “I was born Robert Marcus in Chicago, Illinois in 1901 my eyes were green before it happened. I was seventeen at the time” he replied. “So, how long have you been like this?” asked Kristen. “Since 1918. That’s when Peter found me dying of Spanish influenza. My parents (Edward and Elizabeth) had already died from the disease” replied Robert. “What was it like?” asked Kristen. “The venom was excruciating. But what Peter did was much harder. Not many of us have the restraint to do that” replied Robert. “But didn’t he just have to bite?” asked Kristen confused. “Not exactly. When we taste human blood, a sort of frenzy begins, and it’s almost impossible to stop” replied Robert. They sat down. “But Peter did” said Kristen. “First with me and then with his wife, Elizabeth. We in Ashland, Wisconsin in 1921, when Peter found her” said Robert. “Have you always been with Peter?” asked Kristen. “No, I left them in 1927, but I went back to them in 1931” replied Robert. “What about the others?” asked Kristen. “The next one to be brought into the family was Nikki. We were in Rochester, New York in 1933, when Peter found her. The last one to be brought into the family was Kellan. We were in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in 1935, when Nikki found him, but she asked Peter to change him, feeling she didn’t the restraint to stop” replied Robert. “What about Ashley and Jackson?” asked Kristen. “They joined the family in 1950, they had been together since 1948. Jackson belonged to another family, very different from ours. Ashley is a complete mystery, she doesn’t remember anything of her human life” replied Robert.

Kristen felt the need to change the subject. “So is Peter the real reason that you don’t kill people?” she asked. Robert looked at the river for awhile. “No, he’s not the only reason. I don’t want to be a monster. My family, we think of ourselves as vegetarians, right, ‘cause we only survive on the blood of animals. But it’s... It’s like a human only living on tofu. It keeps you strong, but you’re never fully satisfied. It would be like drinking our blood, for instance” he said. Kristen looked down and smiled. Robert looked down. As she looked down, Kristen thought of something and looked up quickly. “Was it other vampires that killed Ned?” she asked. Robert’s face became hard. “Yeah. There are others out there, and we run into them from time to time” he replied. They both looked down for a minute. “Can the rest of your family read people’s minds like you can?” asked Kristen pointing to her own. “No. That’s just me. But Ashley can see the future and Jackson can feel and manipulate emotions” replied Robert. “I bet she saw me coming” said Kristen. “Ashley’s visions are subjective. I mean, the future can always change” said Robert. He stood up, walked to the edge of the rock and jumped onto the one in front. Kristen just sat there and watched.

The next day, Kristen was in the front yard cleaning her truck, while listening to her IPod. Suddenly there was a loud bang. She flinched and looked up. Robert was standing on the roof of the truck and then jumped into the back. “Could you act human? I mean, I’ve got neighbours” said Kristen taking her earphones out and stuffing them into her pocket, as Robert jumped out to stand next to her. “I’m gonna take you to my place tomorrow” said Robert. He bent down and pushed the dent that Gregory’s van made out. “Thanks” said Kristen. Something he said hit her and she turned to him. “Wait, like, with your family?” she asked. “Yeah” replied Robert. Kristen felt very worried. “What if they don’t like me?” she asked. Robert smiled at this. “So, you’re worried not because you’ll be in a house full of vampires, but because you think they won’t approve you?” he asked and his smile grew bigger. “I’m glad I amuse you” replied Kristen. Suddenly, Robert’s face grew serious and he looked up the street. “What is it?” asked Kristen following his gaze. They looked at each other. “Complication. I’ll pick you up tomorrow” replied Robert and walked to his car. Kristen watched him speed up the road just as a tan pickup truck came into view. They passed each other without anyone pulling over.

As the truck came closer, Kristen saw that it was Gil and Taylor. She remembered the story Taylor had told her on the beach. Gil nodded and smiled at Kristen as he drove the truck so he was parked up next to Kristen’s truck. Once they were parked up, Taylor jumped and pulled Gil’s wheelchair out the back. “Hey. Come to visit your truck?” asked Kristen. They looked at her. “Looks good. Got that dent out” replied Taylor handing Gil two brown paper bags. “Yeah” said Kristen giving it a quick look. “Actually, we came to visit your flat-screen. First Mariners game of the season. Plus Taylor here keeps bugging me about seeing you again” said Gil, shooting a look at Taylor. Taylor looked embarrassed. “Great, Dad. Thanks” he whispered. “Just keeping it real, son” said Gil looking at him. Kristen and Taylor looked a little embarrassed at Gil’s words. “Vitamin R” said Billy, coming up from behind Gil and Taylor, holding two six-pack cans of beer. Everyone looked at him. “Well done, Chief” said Gil. He held the two paper bags and looked at them. “Graham Chesterton’s homemade fish fry” he said handing them to Taylor. “Good man” said Billy, giving him the can of beer and wheeling him towards the house. “Any luck with that Ned case?” asked Gil. Behind them, Kristen and Taylor were playfully nudging each other and walked behind them. “Well, I don’t think it was an animal that killed him” replied Billy. “Never thought it was” said Gil, as Billy turned him around to wheel him backwards up the steps. “So spread the word out at the rez, huh? Keep the kids out of the woods” said Billy. “Will do. Don’t want no one else getting hurt, do we?” asked Gil. He was looking at Kristen as he said it. Kristen looked at him, but said nothing as she went up the steps.

The next day, Robert picked Kristen up and drove her to his home. They drove towards the woods just outside town. Once inside the woods, Robert kept on driving. They kept on driving until they reached it. It was a large three story modern house with wooden panels and very large windows. Robert picked up in front, not using the garage, got out and walked in vampire speed to open Kristen’s door. He led her up the steps and inside. Kristen couldn’t believe her eyes. She exhaled and looked around. It was nothing like she had been expecting. “Whoa. This is incredible. It’s so light and open, you know?” she said, as Robert pulled her jacket off. “What did you expect, coffins and dungeons and moats?” asked Robert taking his jacket off and putting it on top of Kristen’s. Kristen chuckled. “No, not the moats” she said. They started walking towards a flight of stairs. “Not the moats” said Robert. As they walked, Kristen saw there was a large wooden cross on its side leaning against the wall and a large collect of paintings. Some operatic music was heard from somewhere else in the house. At the foot of the stairs, Robert turned to Kristen. “This is the one place we don’t have to hide” he said. He turned and walked up the stairs, Kristen followed him. “I told them not to do this” said Robert, hearing their minds from a distance away.

In the kitchen, Peter, Elizabeth, Kellan and Nikki were preparing a meal. They were following instructions from a TV cookery show. “Is she even Italian?” asked Nikki. “I don’t know” replied Kellan, looking up at her. “I’m sure she’ll love it, no matter what” said Peter, not looking round. Nikki sighed just then. “Get a whiff of that” she said. Everyone looked up. Peter and Kellan looked at each other. “Here comes the human” said Nikki in a singsong voice. Elizabeth smiled, looked at Peter, put down the greater she was holding and walked to the kitchen entrance, just as Robert and Kristen came around the corner. Kristen was standing a few feet behind Robert, half hidden. Robert stopped and let her stand next to him. “Kristen, we’re making Italiano for you” said Elizabeth still smiling. Kristen was speechless at the sight of Elizabeth. She looked twenty-three years old with long wavy brown hair and the same gold eyes as the others. “Kristen, this is Elizabeth. My mother for all intents and purposes” said Robert. Behind her, Kellan waved at Kristen with a knife in his hand. Kristen recovered her voice and spoke in Italian. Elizabeth replied back in Italian as well. Peter put down the knife he was using and turned to face them. “You’ve given us an excuse to use the kitchen for the first time” he said smiling. “I hope you’re hungry” said Elizabeth. “Yeah, absolutely” said Kristen. “She already ate” said Robert. Crash! Nikki broke the glass bowl she was holding with both hands. Kristen shot Robert a look. Elizabeth looked behind her. Nikki didn’t pick up the mess, she went onto the step and glared at Kristen. “Perfect” she said. Elizabeth, Robert and Kristen looked at Nikki. Kellan went to stand next to Nikki, Peter whipped his hands and went to stand next to Elizabeth. Kristen turned to Elizabeth. “Yeah, it’s just because I know you guys don’t eat...” she said. “Of course. It’s very considerate of you” said Elizabeth. Peter put his arm around Elizabeth’s shoulders. Robert looked down at Kristen and she looked up at him. “Just ignore Nikki. I do” said Robert. “Yeah. Let’s just keep pretending that this isn’t dangerous for all of us” said Nikki getting angry. Kellan put a hand on her shoulder. Robert glared at Nikki. “I would never tell anybody anything” said Kristen. “She knows that” said Peter looking at Nikki. “Yeah, well, the problem is, you two have gone public now, so...” said Kellan. “Kellan” said Elizabeth shooting him a look. Kellan looked at her. “No, she should know” said Nikki still angrily. She took a step towards Kristen. “The entire family will be implicated if this ends badly” she said still angrily and glaring. “Badly, as in... I would become the meal” said Kristen nervously. Everyone, a part form Nikki, snickered and laughed. Kristen looked at Robert confused and then down to hide her embarrassment. “Hi, Kristen” came Ashley’s voice. She looked up to see her and Jackson walking along the branch of a tree and jumping onto the balcony. Kristen starred at them, as they walked towards her. “I’m Ashley” said Ashley coming right up and hugging her. “Hi” said Ashley. “Hi” said Kristen. Jackson stayed back. Ashley pulled away and stood next to Jackson, looking at Kristen. “You do smell good” she said. “Ashley, what are you...” said Robert and pulled a face at her. “It’s ok. Kristen and I are gonna be great friends” said Ashley smiling at her. Robert looked very embarrassed, but Kristen looked calmly at Ashley. Peter and Ashley looked at Jackson. “Sorry, Jackson’s our newest vegetarian. It’s a little difficult for him” said Peter. Ashley looked back at Kristen. “It’s a pleasure to meet you” said Jackson. Ashley looked at Jackson again. “It’s ok, Jackson. You won’t hurt her” she told him. This was getting too much for Robert. “All right, I’m gonna take you on a tour of the rest of the house” he said. “Ok” said Kristen and stepped backwards. “Well, I’ll see you soon” said Ashley. “Ok” said Kristen, still keeping her eyes on them. Robert gave them a look as he and Kristen turned around and walked away. Elizabeth and Ashley looked at each other smiling. “Cute!” said Elizabeth. “I know” said Ashley. “I think that went well” said Peter. Elizabeth turned to Nikki. “Clean this up. Now” she said firmly and pointing at the mess on the floor.

Robert took Kristen upstairs. On the wall was a collection of masks and more painting. “Was that was weird for you as it was for me?” asked Robert. “I don’t know” replied Kristen, making a face. As they rounded the corner, Kristen two pieces of strange artwork. One was a median sized framed collection of baseball bats and the other was a large sized framed collection of what looked like graduation caps. “Graduation caps” she asked pointing. “Yeah. It’s a private joke. We matriculate a lot” replied Robert leaning against the wall. Robert smiled and Kristen looked at him. “That’s kind of miserable. I mean, repeating high school over and over” said Kristen. “True, but the younger we start out in a new place, the longer we can stay” said Robert. Kristen thought about that. “Come on” said Robert, coming up the stairs and leading her farther up.

At the top of the stairs, Robert turned to the left, Kristen followed him. They walked into a room and stood in the doorway. Kristen looked around it. “Yeah, this is my room” said Robert. It wasn’t anything like Kristen’s room. It had a huge cabinet, with a stereo system and a collect of CDs and records. There was a small bookshelf next to a day bed. A small table stood in front of the bed, full of books. On the wall behind the bed was a stack of shelves full of things he had collected over the years. Next to the door was a flat-screen TV under a desk with more stuff he had collected on it. The windows were huge and filled up one wall. There were two glass doors which stood open. Kristen stepped inside and looked around. Robert followed, watching her carefully. Kristen looked down at the day bed and then at Robert. “No bed” she asked. “No, I don’t... I don’t sleep” replied Robert. “Even?” asked Kristen. “No, not at all” replied Robert. Kristen chuckled softly and looked down smiling. “Ok” she said, looking up and walking over to the cabinet. Robert followed more relaxed since he saw she wasn’t nervous anymore. “Boy, you have so much music. What one are you listening to?” asked Kristen turning on the stereo. The classical music started playing. “It’s Debussy. I don’t know...” replied Robert. “Yeah. Claire De Lune is great” said Kristen, looking at him with a warm expression. Robert took a step towards her and took hold of her hand. Kristen looked at him. He put his other hand on her waist and pulled her in closer. For a moment they stared into each other’s eyes. Robert made Kristen twirl around with one arm up in the air and she looked at him with a weird expression. “What?” asked Robert. “I can’t dance” replied Kristen and chuckled softly. Robert inhaled sharply and lowered Kristen’s arm. “Well, I could always make you” he said. Kristen looked at him. “I’m not scared of you” she said. Robert smiled and looked away for a minute thinking. “Well, you really shouldn’t have said that” he said smiling.

Without warning, Robert flung Kristen onto his back and flew out the open glass doors. Kristen gasped as he did it. They landed about halfway up a tree. “You better hold on tight, spider monkey” said Robert, looking at Kristen. Kristen giggled as Robert climbed up the tree. Once they were almost at the top, Robert stood between the truck and a branch. Kristen was smiling like mad. “Do you trust me?” asked Robert. “In theory” replied Kristen. “Then close your eyes” said Robert, getting ready to spring. Kristen did and he leapt out on the tree. Kristen couldn’t keep them shut and stared wide eyed and mouth open, as they flew. They landed on other tree and Robert climbed up it. Once at the top, Robert helped Kristen off his back and placed her on a branch. They stood on the branch and looked at the view. Kristen couldn’t believe her eyes. “What?” asked Robert. Kristen chuckled. “This isn’t real. This kind of stuff just doesn’t exist” she said. “It does in my world” said Robert. For a long time, they climbed around the branches.

Later, Robert sat at a grand piano and played a gentle melody. Kristen sat on a chair and watched him. Later he got Kristen to sit next to him as he played. It was beautiful, Kristen couldn’t deny that. They sat there for hours, before Robert took Kristen home.

Chapter Five The Truth about Robert

The next morning, Kristen was in her room, on her laptop doing some research on the Quileute Legends. She typed in “Quileute Legends” on her favourite search engine. Looked down the list of websites and clicked on one for books on them. When it came up, she clicked on the shop she wanted “Thunderbird and Whale”. She clicked on “Map” and got a street map showing where it was. It was in Port Angeles. Quickly she wrote down the address, put it in her pocket, turned the laptop off, picked up her rucksack and left for school.

It was a beautiful sunny day. Everyone was in T-shirts. At lunch time Kristen, Justin, Christian, Michael, Anna and Gregory ate outside on the benches. All through lunch, Kristen looked for Robert, but there was no sign of him or his family. “He’s not here” said Anna. She had been staying on the bench soaking in the sun. Kristen looked at her. “Whenever the weather’s nice, the Simons disappear” said Anna. “What, do they just ditch?” asked Kristen. “No, Dr. And Mrs. Simon yank them out for, like, hiking and camping and stuff. I tried that on my parents. Not even close” replied Anna. Just then Christian came up, they looked at her. “Guys, I’m going to the dance with Justin. I just asked him. I took control” said Christian. “I told you that would happen” said Kristen hugging her. “Are you sure you have to go out of town?” asked Christian when she pulled away. “Oh, yeah, it’s a little family thing” replied Kristen. “Ok, we should go shopping in Port Angeles before all the good dresses get cleaned out” said Anna. The school bell rang for the end of lunch. Everyone started collecting their bags and going to class. Anna and Christian stood up and Kristen remembered something Anna said. “Port Angeles? You mind if I come?” she asked. “Yeah, I need your opinion” replied Christian. Kristen smiled, picked up her rucksack and went with them to class.

Straight after school Kristen, Christian and Anna dumped their school stuff at home and went to Port Angeles. They went to one dress shop. Kristen sat against the window, reading a book while Christian and Anna picked out dresses. “I like this one” said Anna picking up a light pink one with thin shoulder straps. “That’s cool” said Christian. Anna slipped the hanger over her head and the dress was one-shoulder. “But, like, I don’t know about the one-shoulder thing” she said. “I like this one” said Christian holding up a sea blue one with thin straps, while wearing a lavender one with lots of thin straps. “Yeah, I like the beading, and you wouldn’t need jewellery” said Anna. “Anna, what do you think? Lavender?” asked Christian. Anna came out of the dressing room wearing a dark pink one and white elbow length gloves with silver around the edge. “Is that good? Is that my colour?” she asked. “I like it” replied Christian. They stood in front of a mirror. “I liked that dusty rose one, too. Ok, I like this one. It makes my boobs look good” said Anna. Just then four boys walked past and looked in the shop. “Hey” called one and knocked on the window. “Right” said Anna as she, Christian and Kristen looked at them. “Nice” he said and walked away. The last one knocked on the window close to where Kristen was sitting. “Oh, God” said Christian looking at Anna. “That is uncomfortable” said Anna. “That’s disgusting” said Kristen looking back at her book when the last one had walked away. “Kristen, what do you think?” asked Anna as she and Christian looked at her. Kristen looked up at them. “Yes?” asked Anna. “That looks great” replied Kristen. Anna got a little annoyed. “You said that about, like, the last five dresses, though” she said. “I thought they were all pretty good” said Kristen. “You’re not really into this, are you?” asked Christian. “I actually really just want to go to this bookstore. I’ll meet you guys at the restaurant?” asked Kristen. “Are you sure?” asked Anna as Kristen put her book away and picked up her bag and coat. “Yeah, yeah. I’ll see you in a minute” replied Kristen. “Ok” said Anna. “Ok” said Christian. As she left, Christian looked at the price tag and gasped while Anna turned back to the mirror. “She’s right, though. This looks awesome” said Anna.

Kristen found the shop and went in. The book was in stock, so she brought it. “There you go” said the bookkeeper handing it over as Kristen handed the money over. Kristen the book in her bag and turned to leave. “Have a good night” called the bookkeeper as Kristen opened the door. “Thankyou” Kristen called back. Once outside, Kristen paused for a moment picking the right direction. It was dark when Kristen reached downtown Port Angeles. She looked around her and then straight ahead. As she approached an alleyway, two figures walked past at the other end. Kristen stopped as they stopped and looked down the alleyway at her. They started to walk towards her, calmly Kristen turned and walked back the way she had come. She looked over her shoulder and saw the figures were coming towards her. Kristen turned right and went that way, the figures followed her. “Saw you in the dress store” said one. “Hey, where you running to?” asked the other. Kristen began to wonder where the other two were. They were in a parking lot and the only two boys were in front of her walking towards her. “There she is” said one in front. Kristen realized she wasn’t been followed, but herded. “What’s up?” asked another one. “That’s my girl” replied one from behind her. As they came closer, Kristen saw cans of beer and realized they were drinking and most likely drunk. “How you guys doing?” asked one in front. “Look who we just found” replied one from behind. One tossed a can of beer to one and he caught it. They crowded around Kristen, trapping her. “What’s up girl? Hey... Where you going?” asked one. “Where are you going?” asked another one. “Come get a drink with us” said another one. “Yeah, you should hang out with us” said the last one. “Come on” said the first one. “It’s fun” said the second one. Kristen tried to back away feeling every scared. “What’s the problem?” asked the third one. “She doesn’t like that, man” replied the fourth one. “You pretty” said one from behind and pushed her forward. “Don’t touch me” said Kristen in a loud voice. “Cute” said one in front of her. “Really, no. Seriously, you should” said the other one from behind, grabbing her and forcing her around. “Don’t touch me” Kristen said much louder and kneed him right where it hurt. He groaned and crouched down. Kristen moved quickly away from him. Suddenly a silver Volvo torn from around the corner and raced towards them. The engine rived as it came forward. Kristen pulled away from the others who had grabbed her. Everyone moved away as the car stopped inches away from hitting them. Kristen gasped as she moved a little farther back and stood frozen in place. The boys were moving even farther back. The driver’s door open and Robert got out. “Get in the car” he ordered. Kristen walked quickly to the car and got in while Robert walked straight up to the boys. “That was a very dangerous maneuver” said one. He stopped and froze in horror. Robert was glaring so darkly at him and growling deeply. He looked and sounded very frightening. The boys backed away in horror. Kristen starred in horror from the passenger side. She could only the back of Robert. She had no idea why they were backing away. Eventually he turned and went to the car. As he got in, he starred at them and Kristen looked at him. He sent the car towards them, forcing them to turn and run away shouting. The tires screeched as the car reversed and drove away at a fast speed. Robert out onto the main road, a horn blaring. Kristen was still feeling scared, Robert was driving like a manic. “I should go back there and rip those guys’ heads off” said Robert angrily. “No, you shouldn’t” said Kristen loudly to control her panic. “You don’t know the vile, repulsive things they were thinking” said Robert still angrily. “And you do?” asked Kristen a little confused. “It’s not hard to guess” replied Robert calming down a little. Kristen looked out the windscreen. “Can you talk about something else? Distract me so I won’t turn around” said Robert, his voice raising. Kristen turned back to look at him. “You should put your seatbelt on” she said, noticing he wasn’t wearing it. Robert laughed. “You should put your seatbelt on” he said, noticing Kristen wasn’t wearing her either. Robert drove faster into town.

He drove her to the restaurant where she was supposed to met Christian and Anna. When they got there, Christian and Anna were coming out. “I thought the salad was pretty good” said Anna. Kristen went up to them. “Hey, you guys, I’m sorry. I just...” she said. “Where were you? We left you messages” said Christian. “Yeah, we waited, but we were, like, staving, so we...” said Anna. The chat broke off, as Robert came and stood next to Kristen. Kristen turned and looked at him. “I’m sorry I kept Kristen from dinner. We just sort of ran into each other and got talking” said Robert. Kristen looked at Christian and Anna. They were having trouble keeping a straight face. “Yeah” said Christian. “No. No. We totally understand. I mean, that happens, right?” said Anna. “Yeah, we were...” said Christian. “We were, yeah, we were leaving. So...” said Anna. “Let’s get this...” said Christian. They walked past and Anna turned to Kristen. “Kristen, if you wanna...” she started. Robert stepped in front of them towards the restaurant. The girls looked at him. “I think I should make sure Kristen gets something to eat. If you’d like” said Robert. Christian, Anna and Kristen starred at him. “I’ll drive you home myself” he added. “That’s so thoughtful” said Christian, looking at Kristen. “It’s really thoughtful. Yeah” said Anna, still looking at Robert. They looked at Kristen. “Yeah. I should eat something” she said. “Yeah” said Christian. Kristen went towards Robert. “Ok, so we’ll see you tomorrow” said Anna. “Ok, yeah” said Kristen, looking at them. “See ya” said Christian. “Ok” said Kristen before turning to Robert. As they walked towards the restaurant, they looked at each other. Christian and Anna looked at each other, giggled and went to their car.

Their waitress was named Katie. She was twenty years old with shoulder length black hair and bright blue eyes. “All right, one mushroom ravioli” she said, putting a plate in front of Kristen. “Thanks” said Kristen. “Yeah, no problem” said Katie. She turned to Robert. “So are you sure there isn’t anything I can get you?” she asked, smiling. “No. No, thankyou” replied Robert. “Let me know” said Katie before walking away. Kristen looked at her and sighed softly, before looking away. For a moment neither of them spoke. “You’re really not gonna eat?” asked Kristen, picking up a fork. She looked down. “No, I’m on a special diet” replied Robert. Kristen looked up quickly. “You gotta give me some answers” she said. Robert just looked at her. “Yes, no. To get to the other side. (Kristen looked away for a second). 1.77245...” he said. “I don’t want to know what the square root of pi is” Kristen interrupted. “You knew that?” asked Robert. “How did you know where I was?” asked Kristen keeping calm. “I didn’t” replied Robert. That was not the answer Kristen was looking for and she felt angry. “All right” she said and went to get to her feet. “What? Don’t leave. I...” begged Robert. Kristen was already half way up, she looked at him for a moment and sat back down. “Did you follow me?” asked Kristen. Robert was looking down. “I... (He looked up into her eyes). I feel very protective of you” he replied. Kristen looked away for a second. “So you followed me” she said. “I was trying to keep a distance unless you needed my help, and then I heard what those low-lifes were thinking” replied Robert. “Wait. You say you heard what they thinking?” asked Kristen confused. Robert looked away and laughed softly. “So what, you... You read minds?” asked Kristen even more confused. Robert’s eyes flicked up to Kristen’s eyes. “I can read every mind in this room. Apart from yours. There’s money, sex, money, sex, cat. (Kristen had been looking around the room as he said this and looked back at him). And then you, nothing. It’s very frustrating” replied Robert. Kristen felt very uncomfortable that he couldn’t read her mind. “Is there something wrong with me?” she asked. Robert found this very funny, he smiled and looked away from a second. “See, I tell you I can read minds, and you think there’s something wrong with you” he said. Kristen gave him a weird look and looked down for a second. When she looked up, he was upset about something. He exhaled and looked down. “What is it?” asked Kristen in a comforting voice. When he looked up, his face was serious. “I don’t have the strength to stay away from you anymore” he replied. Kristen felt very confused about him staying away from her. “Then don’t” she said after a moment. They just stared into each other’s eyes.

It had been raining while they had been in the restaurant. Robert drove Kristen home. All the way into Forks, Kristen couldn’t take her eyes off Robert. While they were driving Robert had the car heater on full power. “Ok, I think I’m warm enough now” said Kristen. She reached forward to turn it off, but Robert stopped her. Their fingers touched and Kristen’s hand flinched back. She gasped and looked at him. Robert shot her a quick look, she was still looking at him with her mouth hanging open. “Your hand is so cold” said Kristen. Robert didn’t reposed, but his hands gripped the steering wheel very tightly. Finally, Kristen looked out the windscreen. For a long time, they drove in silence. Suddenly, there was flashing red and blue lights up ahead. Kristen felt uneasy as they came up to the police station. Every cruiser there had their lights on and there was an ambulance parked up. “Whoa! What is going on? My dad’s still here. Can you pull in?” asked Kristen. As they pulled up, they saw a black Mercedes S55 AMG right at the end of the line. “That’s my father’s car on the end. What is he doing here?” asked Robert aloud. They got out of the car just as Dr. Simon came out of the police station. “Peter, what’s going on?” asked Robert. Kristen was a little bit surprised that he called him by his first name. “Ned Franks was found in a boat out near his place. I just examined the body” replied Peter. Shock ran through both Robert and Kristen. “He died?” asked Kristen. Peter nodded sadly. “How?” asked Kristen. “Animal attack” replied Peter. Robert looked seriously at Peter. “Was it the same one that got that security guard down in Mason?” asked Kristen. “Most likely” replied Peter looking down for a second. “Well, it’s getting closer to town, then” said Kristen. “Kristen, you should go inside. Ned was your father’s friend” said Peter, stepping towards her. “Ok” said Kristen and walked towards the entrance. Once up the steps, she turned and saw both Peter and Robert were looking at her. “I’ll see you later” she said to Robert. She turned and walked towards the doors. Peter had turned and looked at Robert (who was still looking at Kristen). As Kristen walked in, Peter walked to his car, Robert looked after him and went to his car.

Kristen found Billy sitting at his desk, staring into space. She walked up to him and bent down to talk to him. Billy looked up at her. “Hey” said Kristen. “Hey” said Billy and looked away. For a few seconds no one spoke. “Dad, I’m really sorry” said Kristen looking at him. “I’ve known him going on 30 years” said Billy not looking at Kristen. Kristen put a hand on his shoulder. Billy lifted his hand and held on to Kristen’s. There was a pause. “Don’t worry, we’re gonna find this thing. (He let go of Kristen’s hand and looked at her). Meantime, I want you to carry this with you” said Billy. He had reached into a drawer and held up a small can of pepper spray. Kristen looked down at it and made a face. “I don’t know if you...” started Kristen. “It will give your old man some peace of mind” Billy interrupted. “Ok” said Kristen and took it from him. It was quiet for a few seconds. “Let’s go home” said Billy. They both stood up, Billy pulled on his jacket and they walked out.

As Kristen walked out the police station towards Billy’s cruiser, two ambulance men were wheeling a stretcher towards the ambulance. Covered up and strapped on it was Ned’s body. Ned’s feet were sticking out at the end. As she stopped to let them go first, Kristen thought about something and flashbacks popped into her head. She froze as they came to her. The first was Robert’s strange black eyes on the day she met him. The next was him and his family not eating or drinking anything at lunch. The last was Robert’s ice-cold hands gripping the wheel on the ride back from Port Angeles. Once the ambulance men had passed, Kristen looked quickly back over her shoulder to see Billy was coming up behind her. He caught up and they walked to the cruiser.

Later alone in her room, Kristen turned on her laptop and put the book of Quileute Legends out of her bag. She sat down at her little desk and flicked through the book. She stopped on a page at had the side of a strange head with a black eye. Under the picture was a sentence. Two words jumped out at her. “Cold One” she said. It made no sense. She closed the book and typed “The Cold One” on her favourite search engine. When all the searches came up, Kristen clicked on one that took onto a website. There was a big picture of a strange creature that looked human with pointed fangs eating humans. Kristen felt a little uneasy. It was called the Demon of the Night. The page was showing what people believed this creature did in the Pacific Northwest. She clicked on Egypt. The Egyptians called it “The Immortal Drink”. An ancient Egypt showed two people with goblets of blood. She clicked on India and the Indians called it “Scourge of the Ganges”. The pictured showed a horrible creature with claws and fangs. She clicked on Peru and had a process called “The Demon’s Dismemberment”. The pictured showed four men ripping a fifth to pieces over a fire. Kristen felt even more uneasy now. She read through a paragraph, certain words jumped out at her and more flashbacks came to her. She was feeling very frightened now. The first one was “undead”. The second one was “speed”, a flashback of Robert getting to Kristen moments before Gregory’s van would have hit her flashed before her eyes. The third one was “strength”, a flashback of Robert stopping the van with his hand flashed up, she could even hear the echoing boom. The fourth one was “cold-skinned”, a flashback of Robert’s ice-cold hand touching hers appeared. The fifth one was “Immortal”. The sixth one was “drank blood”. The seventh and final one was “vampire”.

Kristen laying on a sofa somewhere and Robert was leaning over her. At once he lifted her up slightly and brought his lips to her throat. Kristen had closed her eyes. When he pulled away, Kristen’s blood was around his mouth. Kristen flinched and opened her eyes. It had all been a dream. She was lying in bed and it had been hours after reaching the Cold Ones. As she lay there, she started thinking. She now knew what Robert was and tomorrow she was going to confront him.

Chapter Four La Push and Taylor gives a clue

That night, Kristen had a dream. She was in bed asleep, dreaming about Robert, when she woke gasping. She looked over at her chest of drawers to see Robert standing there. She got part of the way up, looked at her bedside table, turned the lamp on and looked quickly at her chest of drawers. Robert wasn’t there. Kristen leaned back on the pillow with her arm on top of her head thinking. She laughed softly and placed her hand on her forehead. She sat up and ran her fingers through her hair. “And that was the first night I dreamt of Robert Simon” she thought.

The next morning, Mr. Morgan was taking them on a field trip to a greenhouse. “I need everybody’s permission slips, ok? Sammy, please collect them” he said. “Yeah” said a boy. “Guys, let’s go. Come on, get in. In. Let’s go!” said Mr. Morgan. Kristen was parked in the exact same place, she had been yesterday. She was standing next to her truck thinking. She saw the dent in the back of the truck and her mind went back to yesterday evening. I her mind, she saw Robert pulling her from the ground and pushing the van away with his hand. She looked up and saw Robert, Ashley and Jackson coming towards the buses. Kristen kept her eyes on Robert until Michael came in front of her. “Look at you, huh? You’re alive” said Michael. Kristen looked down for a second, looked back up and made a face. “I know, yeah. False alarm, I guess” said Kristen. “Yeah. Now, I wanted to ask you, you know, if, you know, it’s like days away, but...” said Michael. He laughed nervously. “Do you wanna go to the dance with me?” asked Michel. But Kristen was paying attention. She was looking at Robert and he was looking at her. “So, what do you think?” asked Michael. Kristen snapped out of it. “About what?” she asked, looking at Michael. “Do you want to go? To the dance? With me?” asked Michael. Michael laughed nervously and Kristen understood what he was saying. “Oh! I... Dance. Dancing. Not such a good idea for me. I have something that weekend anyway. I’m going to Jacksonville that weekend” she said. “You can’t go another weekend?” asked Michael. “Non-refundable ticket. You should ask Anna. I know she wants to go with you” replied Kristen. They both looked at Anna, who was standing next to Mr. Morgan and a girl. “All right. All right” said Mr. Morgan. Anna saw them looking at her, smiled and waved at them. Michael looked at Kristen and smiled. “Yo, yo, yo. Hey, guys, come on. We gotta go. We gotta go. Green is what? Good. Let’s go. Guys, come on” said Mr. Morgan. Kristen and Michael looked each other walked towards the buses. Robert smiled at Ashley and Jackson and walked towards the buses as well. “Other bus, other bus. Let’s go” said Mr. Morgan and to the other bus.

At the greenhouse, they walked around and Mr. Morgan asked Justin to help him with a machine. “Egg shells, carrot tops. Compost is cool. Now, stuff that in there, Justin” said Mr. Morgan. “Yes, sir. Yes, sir” said Justin. “Very good, very good” said Mr. Morgan, taking a glass out of the machine. “Now, I am going to make a steaming cup of compost tea. Ok” said Mr. Morgan, getting it from a tap in the machine and holding it up for everyone to see. “Give me that” said Gregory, taking it from Mr. Morgan. “Yeah. This is recycling in its most basic form, guys. Don’t drink it! It’s for the plants” said Mr. Morgan. Kristen saw that Robert had stopped in front of her. She was prepared to ignore him, if he started. She walked right past him. “What’s in Jacksonville?” asked Robert. Kristen turned and looked at him for a second and then looked away. He walked behind her. “How did you know about that?” asked Kristen. She looked quickly back at him and then away. “You didn’t answer my question” said Robert. “You don’t answer any of mine, so... I mean, you don’t even say hi to me” said Kristen. “Hi” said Robert. “Are you gonna tell me how you stopped the van?” asked Kristen. “Yeah. I had an adrenaline rush. It’s very common. You can Google it” replied Robert. Kristen didn’t believe him, but decided to play along. “Floridians. That’s what’s in Jacksonville” she said. Just then, she slipped on something and Robert caught her under the arm and pulled her up. “Can you at least watch where you walk?” asked Robert, angrily. Kristen felt angry and started to walk away. “Look, I’m sorry I’m being rude all the time. I just think it’s the best way” said Robert. Kristen looked at him. “Kristen! Guess you just asked me to the dance” said Anna, coming up to them. Robert walked away. “Who?” asked Kristen looking at Anna. “Yeah, I actually totally thought that Michael was gonna ask you” replied Anna, as they started walking again. “It’s not gonna be weird, though, right?” asked Anna. “No. Zero weirdness. You guys are great together” replied Kristen. “I know, right?” asked Anna.

Later when it was almost time to go, everyone was going outside, looking it the compost heap in a tin tub. Justin, Michael and Gregory were poking them with sticks. Christian and Anna were watching them. The boys were hooting as Kristen came out. “Gregory...” said a girl jumping backwards. “Gross” said a boy. Justin looked around with something on the end of his stick and saw Kristen walking close to them. “Kristen, look. It’s a worm” he said holding up to Kristen’s face. Kristen cringed away from it. Justin guffawed. “It’s a worm” he said. As she walked, she could tell that Robert was walking fast to catch up with her. She looked over her shoulder to see him only a few inches behind her. “Kristen, we shouldn’t be friends” said Robert. They walked slowly to the bus. “You really should’ve figured that out a little earlier. I mean, why didn’t you just let the van crush me and save your all this regret?” asked Kristen angrily. They stopped and Robert looked at her. “What, you think I regret saving you?” asked Robert. “I can see that you do. I just... I don’t know why” replied Kristen. “You don’t know anything” said Robert. While they were talking, they didn’t notice Ashley and Jackson coming up to them. Ashley came right up to Robert and Kristen, but Jackson held back. “Hi. Are you gonna be riding with us?” asked Ashley. “No, our bus is full” replied Robert, before Kristen could see anything. He turned, banged on the bus door and got on. Kristen moved aside so Ashley and Jackson could get on, she shot another look at Robert.

Billy was sitting at the kitchen table, reading the newspaper when Kristen got home. He looked up as she came in carrying her coat over her arm and her rucksack on one shoulder. She dumped them on the other chair and her rucksack fell to the floor. She left it there. “You mom called. Again” said Billy. Billy hadn’t cleaned up after eating, Kristen picked up his plate and looked into a crisp packet. “Well, that’s your fault. You shouldn’t have told her about the “almost” accident. You finished?” asked Kristen. “Yeah” replied Billy, as Kristen took his plate to the sink and placed it in there. “Yeah, I suppose you’re right. She always did know how to worry. Kristen took a glass and filled it with water. “She seems different” said Billy as Kristen took a drink. “She seems happy. Ty sounds like an all right guy” said Billy as Kristen tipped the rest of the water down the drain. “Yeah, he is” said Kristen turning around and leaning on the sink for a moment. She cleared her throat and looked down as she stood there. She sighed and walked out of the room. “All right” said Billy looking after her.

The next day at lunch time, Kristen was standing by the table she was going to sit at with Justin, Christian, Michael, Anna and Gregory. “No, you need the mitts. You need them” said Justin. Kristen looked over her shoulder at Robert’s table. He was sitting there with his brother, sister, foster brother and foster sister. Robert was holding a piece of cookie in his hand. “No, why do you keep arguing with me? You just need them” said Justin. Robert then looked up and saw Kristen, then he looked down at the piece of cookie. Jackson was looking at her now. “You’re gonna get frostbite!” said Justin. Kristen even heard Robert say something. “I don’t even know” he said, dropping the piece of cookie back on the tray. Kristen looked away and went to sit down, but remained standing up. Everyone looked at her. “Yeah. Hey! La Push, baby. You in” asked Justin. “Should I know what that means?” asked Kristen. “La Push Beach down at the Quileute Rez. We’re all going tomorrow” said Michael. “Yeah, there’s a big swell coming in” said Anna. “And don’t just surf the Internet” said Justin standing up. Michael stood up and did a surf pose until Gregory pulled him back down. “Justin you stood up once, and it was a foam board” said Anna. “But there’s whale watching, too. Come with us” said Christian. “La Push, baby. It’s La Push” said Justin, as Kristen took a bite of salad. “Ok, I’ll go if you stop saying that, ok?” said Kristen with her mouth full. She then looked down and smiled. “Seriously, dude. It’s creepy, man” said Michael. Kristen walked off to the salad bar. “What? That’s what it’s called” said Justin. “So...” said Anna.

While Kristen was at the salad bar, she was distracted thinking about something. “Edible art?” came Robert’s voice. Kristen jumped and knocked an apple off her tray. Robert bounced the apple up on his foot and caught it in both hands. Kristen looked up at him and he looked back. “Kristen” he said smiling. He handed her the apple. “Thanks. You know, your mood swings are kind of giving me whiplash” said Kristen, moving around to the other side. Robert followed her. “I only said it’d be better if we weren’t friends, not that I didn’t wanna be” said Robert. “What does that mean?” asked Kristen. “It means if you were smart, you’d stay away from me” replied Robert. Kristen wasn’t having this. “Ok, well, let’s say for argument’s sake that I’m not smart. Would you tell me the truth?” she asked. “No, probably not” replied Robert. Kristen looked away. “I’d rather hear your theories” said Robert. Justin, Christian, Michael, Anna and Gregory were watching them from their table, so was Robert’s family from theirs. “I have considered radioactive spiders and Kryptonite” said Kristen, keeping her head down. “That’s all superhero stuff, right?” asked Robert. Kristen looked up. “What if I’m not the hero? What if I’m the bad guy” asked Robert. “You’re not” replied Kristen shaking her head. Robert looked at her. “I can see what you’re trying to put off, but I can see that it’s just to keep people away from you. It’s a mask” said Kristen. Robert still looked at her. Kristen looked down for a moment, thinking. “Why don’t we just hang out?” she asked. Robert smiled, liking the idea. “Everybody’s going to the beach. Come. I mean, have fun” said Kristen. Robert looked down for a moment thinking. “Which beach?” he asked. “La Push” replied Kristen. “I don’t know. I just...” said Robert, putting his hand on the top of the salad bar. “Is there something wrong with that beach?” asked Kristen. Robert looked away for a minute. “It’s just a little crowded” he replied.

The next day Kristen, Justin, Christian, Michael, Anna and Gregory went to La Push. It was cloudy, cold and very windy. The beach wasn’t anything like the beaches, Kristen was used to in California and Arizona. It wasn’t a sandy beach. It was stony with drift woods logs by the ocean. There were a couple of surfers already out there. Justin, Michael, Anna and Gregory were surfing while Kristen and Christian sat in Gregory’s van. “Hey, it’s freezing” said Michael as he looked out to sea. “I’m paddling out, Coates” said Gregory with his wet suit on and holding his surf board. Justin, Michael and Anna were still getting changed. “I don’t know if it’s worth it anymore” said Justin. “We drove all the way out here. I’m at least paddling out” said Anna. “Yeah” said Justin. “She’s right” said Michael. “You guys are babies” said Anna. “So I keep thinking that Justin’s gonna ask me to the dance, and then he just doesn’t” said Christian. “You should ask him” said Kristen after thinking about it. Christian looked down at her and shook her head. Kristen turned to look at her. “Take control. You’re a strong, independent woman” she said. “I am?” asked Christian. “Yes” replied Kristen. They were still looking at each other when Anna came over. “Hey, will you do me up?” she asked, turning around. “Yeah” replied Christian and did her zip up. Just then, three sixteen year old boys with black hair, brown eyes and light brown skin came over. Kristen recognized the only with the short hair, but the other two had long hair and she didn’t know they. “Kristen!” said Taylor. “Hi, Taylor” said Kristen. She looked at the others. “Guys, this is Taylor” she said. “Hey, guys. How you doing?” asked Taylor. “Hi” said Anna. “Hi” said Christian. Taylor introduced his two friends (Krys and Solomon) and Kristen introduced Justin, Christian, Michael and Anna (she told them Gregory was already surfing). Taylor sat in the van next to Kristen. “What are you, like, stalking me?” asked Kristen. Taylor looked at her and scoffed. “You’re on my rez, remember? Are you surfing?” he asked. Kristen had been looking down and looked up at him. “Definitely not” she replied, smiling and holding up a red vine for Taylor. “Thanks” he said taking it from her. “You guys should keep Kristen company. Her date bailed” said Anna. “What date?” asked Justin. “She invited Robert” replied Anna. Kristen looked down, embarrassed. “To be polite, that’s it” she said without looking up. “I think it’s nice she invited him. Nobody ever does” said Christian. “Yeah, ‘cause Simon’s a freak” said Michael. “You got that right” said the one named Solomon. Kristen looked up quickly. “You guys know him?” she asked. “The Simons don’t come here” replied Solomon. Krys looked like him knew something. Taylor glared at them and took a bite from his red vine. Kristen looked at them stunned.

Later, Taylor took Kristen for a walk along the beach. This part of the beach was sandy, but wet. It was raining, so they had their hoods up. Krys and Solomon stayed in the parking lot. “What did your friends mean about, you know, “The Simons don’t come here” ?” asked Kristen. “You caught that, huh?” asked Taylor. Kristen looked at him. “I’m not really supposed to say anything about it?” said Taylor. “Hey, I can keep a secret” said Kristen. Taylor laughed. “Really it’s like an old scary story” he said. “Well, I want to know” said Kristen. Taylor explained that a lot of the Quileutes believe the story and a handful (including himself, Krys, Solomon and four others) didn’t. Kristen glared at him and he caved in. “Ok, did you know Quileutes are supposedly descended from wolves?” asked Taylor. “What? Like, wolves?” asked Kristen. “Yeah” replied Taylor. “Like, real wolves?” asked Kristen. “Well, that’s the legend of our tribe” said Taylor. “Ok. So what the story about the Simons?” asked Kristen. “Well, they’re supposedly descended from this, like, enemy clan. My great grandfather, the chief, found them hunting on our land. But they claimed be something different, so we made a treaty with them. If they promised to stay off Quileute lands, then we wouldn’t expose what they really were to the palefaces” replied Taylor. Kristen felt very confused. “I thought they just moved here” she said. “Or just moved back” said Taylor. “Right” said Kristen and Taylor looked away. Suddenly they heard Christian scream. They stopped and looked behind them. Christian was running and Justin was chasing her holding something long at arm’s length in his hand. “It touched my hand. A snake! Stop!” shouted Christian. Kristen and Taylor turned back to one another. “Well, what are they really?” asked Kristen. “It’s just a story, Kristen. Come on, let’s go” replied Taylor. They walked away. Christian’s screams continued. “A snake! A snake!” shouted Christian.

Chapter Three Van Crash

The next day was cloudy and it had been raining. Kristen in front of her truck in the student car parking lot, reading a book and listening to her IPod. She was waiting for Robert to show. She had planned to confront him and demand to know what his problem was. They arrived, (Kellan driving the Jeep, Nikki driving the BMW, Ashley driving the Porsche and Jackson on the Ducati), all expect Robert, (he must own the Volvo). Justin, Christian, Michael and Anna were standing with Gregory, next to his van. “Kristen!” called Gregory and threw a piece of lickerish whip at her. It hit her on the shoulder and she looked round. They were looking at her. She smiled and made wrist clapping. They turned away and Kristen looked away. After a few seconds, Kristen looked over at Robert’s family only to see Ashley and Jackson walking up the steps. They were looking at her, but they turned away. Kristen looked away, feeling uneasy. Kristen walked into Biology the next day, her face fell when she saw Robert’s empty seat. The day after that, Kristen was in the cafeteria and she looked other at them. Robert wasn’t there, but Nikki, Ashley and Jackson looked at her. It was like that for the rest of the week.

It was raining as Billy was driving Kristen’s truck back to house. He was parking up, as Kristen came out of the house for school. Kristen wiped some drops of rain off her face as she walked down the steps. She was almost at the truck, when she slipped on a patch of ice and fell onto her bottom. She grunted as Billy got out and hurried over. “You all right?” he asked, as he helped Kristen to her feet. “Yeah, I’m good. Ice doesn’t really help the uncoordinated” replied Kristen. “Yeah. That’s why I had some new tires put on the truck. Old ones were getting pretty bald” said Billy, kicking the closest tire. Kristen looked down at them. “Well, probably be late for dinner. I gotta head down to Mason County. Security guard at the Grisham Mill got killed by some kind of animal” said Billy, walking to the cruiser. “An animal?” asked Kristen puzzled. Billy opened the driver’s side door and turned back to look at her. “You’re not in Phoenix anymore, Kristen” he said. Kristen looked away thoughtful for a second. “Anyway, I figured I’d lend a hand” said Billy. “Be careful” said Kristen. “Always am” said Billy. “And thanks for the tires” said Kristen. “Yeah” said Billy and got in the cruiser. Kristen turned and got into the truck.

The rain had picked up by the time Kristen got to school. There was the sound of thunder now. Today, Kristen’s first lesson of the day was Biology. She walked to class with Justin. Justin was talking about the upcoming dance. “Dance Committee is a chick thing, but I gotta cover it for the paper anyway, and they need a guy to help choose the music, so I need your play list” said Justin, as they walked into Biology and Kristen was hanging up her jacket on coat stand near the door. Kristen turned and looked at him. “Hey, listen, I was wondering, did you have a date to...” said Justin. Before he could finish, Michael came in. “What’s up, Arizona? Huh? How you liking the rain, girl?” asked Michael, shaking his wet cap over Kristen’s head, before hanging it on the coat stand. Kristen shot him a look. “Better get used to it, girl” said Michael, taking off his jacket and hanging it on top of his cap. “Yeah, Michael, hey, you’re real cute, man” said Justin. “Oh, I know...” Michael started to say. “That was really awesome. Why you shooting down my game? Let a playa play” said Justin. “Yeah, ok. What are you playing at, T-Ball?” asked Michael.

Kristen walked passed them, looked towards her table and smiled. Robert was back. He looked up and starred at her. There was a microscope on each table today. Kristen went straight to her seat next to him. Justin and Michael were now at their seats. As she sat down, Kristen shot him and quick look and looked away. Robert looked at her. “Hello” he said. Kristen turned and looked at him. “I’m sorry, I didn’t get a chance to introduce myself last week. I’m Robert Simon. You’re Kristen?” he asked. “Yes” replied Kristen, shocked by his politeness. Mr. Morgan began the lesson just then. “Onion root tip cells, that’s what’s on your slides right now. Ok? So, separate and label them into the phases of Mitosis, and the first partners that get it right are gonna win the Golden Onion” he said, picking up the Golden Onion. The other students catcalled. “All right, good” said a boy. “Ladies, first” said Robert, moving the microscope towards Kristen. Kristen looked at him. “You were gone” she said before putting her eye to the eye piece. “Yeah. I was out of town for a couple of days. Personal reasons” said Robert. Kristen looked up at him. “Prophase” said Kristen, moving the microscope back towards Robert. “Do you mind if I look?” asked Robert. Kristen looked at him and then away. Robert moved the microscope closer to him and looked through the eye piece. “It’s Prophase” he said and wrote it down. “Like I said” said Kristen. Robert finished writing and looked at Kristen. “So are you enjoying the rain?” he asked. Kristen looked at him and laughed anxiously. “What?” asked Robert smiling. “You’re asking me about the weather?” asked Kristen with a puzzled look. “Yeah, I... I guess I am” replied Robert. “Well, I don’t really like the rain. Any cold, wet thing, I don’t really...” said Kristen. Robert sniggered and looked down to put another slide on the microscope. “What?” asked Kristen. “Nothing” replied Robert, shaking his head and laughed. He looked through the eye piece. “It’s Anaphase” he said, looking up and then down to write. “You mind if I check?” asked Kristen. “Sure” replied Robert. Kristen moved the microscope towards her and looked through the eye piece. She looked up and at Robert, who was looking at her. “Anaphase” she said. “Like I said” said Robert. Robert looked down to write and smiled to himself. Kristen just looked at him. “If you hate the cold and the rain so much, why’d you move to the wettest place in the continental US?” asked Robert, looking up at her. Kristen looked down. “It’s complicated” she said. “I’m sure I can keep up” said Robert. Kristen looked up at him. “My mom remarried, and...” she began. “So you don’t like the guy, or...” said Robert. “No, that’s not... Ty’s really nice” said Kristen. While she was talking, Kristen couldn’t stop looking at Robert’s eyes. The last time she had since him, his eyes were black, but today they were gold. Robert looked away, pulled the microscope towards him, put another slide on and looked through the eye piece. Kristen kept her eyes on him. “It’s Metaphase. You want to check?” asked Robert, looking up. Kristen shook her head. “I believe you” she said, looking down.

At the end of the lesson, Mr. Morgan declared Robert and Kristen were the winners. They got the Golden Onion, but Robert gave it to Kristen to keep. Robert decided to walk Kristen to her locker. As they walked, neither of them spoke for a while. “Why didn’t you move with your mother and Ty?” asked Robert. Kristen looked at him. “Well, Ty’s a minor league Baseball player, and he travels a lot, and my mom stayed home with me, but I knew it made her unhappy, so I figured I’ll stay with my dad for a while” replied Kristen. They had reached Kristen’s locker, Kristen leaned against it and looked at Robert. “And now you’re unhappy” said Robert. “No” said Kristen. “I’m sorry, I’m just... I’m just trying to figure you out. You’re very difficult for me to read” said Robert. Kristen looked into his eyes and couldn’t stand it any longer. “Hey, did you get contacts?” she asked. “No” replied Robert. “Your eyes were black the last time I saw you, and now they’re, like, golden brown” said Kristen. “Yeah, I know, it’s the... It’s the fluorescents” said Robert, closing his eyes. He opened his eyes, turned and walked away. Kristen watched him. When he had gone, Kristen turned away and got ready for her next class.

It had stopped raining, by the end of the day. Kristen walked to her truck, listening to her IPod and holding the Golden Onion. When she reached it, she placed her rucksack on the bonnet and looked towards the farther end on the lot, towards the school. Robert was standing next his Volvo, starring at her. His family were also starring at her. Ashley looked at Robert for a split second and then back at Kristen. For a few seconds Kristen and Robert simply stared at each other. Soon, Kristen looked away and started to put the Golden Onion into her rucksack. Just then, Gregory came driving towards the exit, but another car was backing out, as he was coming up to it. The car honked and Gregory’s van skidded on a patch of ice, trying to avoid a crash. Everyone whipped around to see Gregory lose control of his van. Hearing the sound of tires screeching getting closer, Kristen turned around fast and froze in horror, as Gregory’s van came sliding sideways towards her. Out of nowhere, Robert came running up and pulled her to the ground. He crouched down over her and held his hand up. There was a loud thud, as the van collided with Robert’s up raised hand. The back of the van crashed into Kristen’s truck and inside the van, Gregory hit his head on the steering wheel and granted loudly. The van moved an inch away from Robert’s hand and stopped. Kristen couldn’t believe her eyes at what just happened. Both Robert and Kristen were looking at the van. Robert then looked down at Kristen at the same time that Kristen looked up at him, letting out a breath trembling. For a moment they starred at each other. Suddenly, Robert stood up, climbed up in the back of the truck, jumped out and walked away. Kristen looked back at Gregory’s van and starred in horror at the damage. “Kristen!” shouted the students. “Kristen!” shouted someone. Nearly the whole of the junior class was running over. Christian ran around to her, while Michael climbed over, Justin peeked over the back with Anna, Gregory slid over to the passage side and winded the window to look at. “Dial 911!” shouted a girl, as Michael and Christian helped Kristen to her feet. “I already called. They’re gonna send somebody over soon” shouted a boy. Gregory stuck his head out of the open window. There was a cut on his forehead that was bleeding down to his eye. “Kristen, I’m so sorry. I panicked” said Gregory. Kristen removed her headphones from inside her ears and looked around shocked. “Kristen, I got 911 on the phone now” said a girl. The only ones that didn’t rush over were Robert’s family. They just stood where they were looking angry.

Kristen and Gregory were rushed to Forks Hospital for an examination. While they were being checked the door opened and Billy came in, looking worried. He relaxed a little when he saw Kristen. “Kristen. You ok?” he asked coming over to Kristen’s bed. He looked over at Gregory, who was sitting on the bed next to her. “You and I are gonna a talk. You all right?” asked Billy pointing at Gregory before turning back to Kristen. Kristen looked at Billy with a blood pressure cuff on her arm that was being looked at by a nurse. “I’m fine, Dad. Calm down” replied Kristen. They both looked at Gregory. “I’m sorry, Kristen. I tried to stop” said Gregory. “I know. It’s ok” said Kristen. She looked down at her arm just as the cuff was taken off, but Billy kept his eyes on Gregory. “No. It sure as hell is not ok” said Billy. Kristen looked up at him. “Dad, it wasn’t his fault” she said and looked down at her hand. “You could have been killed. You understand that?” asked Billy turning back to her. She looked up at him. “Yes. But I wasn’t, so...” she said. Billy turned back to Gregory. “You can kiss your license goodbye” said Billy, sternly. Before Kristen could see anything, the door opened and a doctor walked in. He was twenty-three with short neat blond hair and the same gold eyes that Robert had. This had to his adoptive father. “I heard the chief’s daughter was here” he said walking towards them. “Dr. Simon” said Billy. “Billy” said Dr. Simon and stop in front of Kristen. “I’ve got this one, Jackie” said Dr. Simon, taking Kristen’s chart from the nurse and she walked away. He looked down at it. “Kristen” he said, looking through it. “Yeah” said Kristen. “Well, Kristen, looks like you took quite a spill. How do you feel?” he asked looking up. “Good” replied Kristen. Dr. Simon pulled a pen-like-torch out of his pocket. “Look here” he said turning it on, holding it up, shining it into Kristen’s eye, with one finger up so Kristen could look at it. “You might experience some post-traumatic stress or disorientation, but your vitals look good” said Dr. Simon, switching hands as he spoke. He turned the torch off and put it back in his pocket. “No signs of any head trauma. I think you’ll be just fine” said Dr. Simon, smiling at Kristen. “I’m so sorry, Kristen. I’m really...” started Gregory. Kristen looked at him while he was talking. Billy pulled the curtain across, giving them some privacy. Kristen looked at Dr. Simon, who was writing on the chart. “You know, it would’ve been a whole lot worse if Robert wasn’t there. He knocked me out of the way” said Kristen. “Robert? Your boy?” asked Billy. “Yeah, it was amazing. I mean, he got to me so fast. He was nowhere near me” said Kristen. “Sounds like you were very lucky” said Dr. Simon. He smiled at Kristen. “Billy” he said and walked away. Kristen got the feeling that he was in on it.

As they walked out of the ward, Billy turned to Kristen. “I gotta go sign some paperwork. You should... You should probably call your mom” he said. Kristen looked at him shocked. “Did you tell her?” she asked. Billy made a face and a hand jester, (he had Kristen’s rucksack over one shoulder and was also holding it). Kristen looked down and groaned. “She’s probably just freaking out” said Kristen, taking her phone out of her pocket. She walked off to find somewhere to call Sarah from. As she came to a corner, she heard a voice. “...fifteen kids that saw what happened”, it was a girl’s voice. Kristen peeked around the corner and saw Robert talking with Dr. Simon and Nikki. Quickly she ducked back around the corner. “What was I supposed to do, then? Let her die?” asked Robert. “This isn’t just about you. It’s about all of us” said Nikki. Kristen peeked around the corner again. “I think we should take this in my office” said Dr. Simon. He had spotted her, Nikki and Robert looked over at her. “Can I talk to you for a minute?” asked Kristen. “Nikki” said Dr. Simon and he and Nikki walked towards the end of the corridor. Robert walked towards Kristen, who had ducked back around the corner and was leaning against the wall. “What?” asked Robert, stopping at the corner. Kristen pushed off the wall and turned to look at him. “How did you get over to me so fast?” asked Kristen. “I was standing right next to you, Kristen” replied Robert. “No. You were next to your car, across the lot” said Kristen. “No, I wasn’t” said Robert smiling. He laughed softly. “Yes, you were” said Kristen, getting angry. “Kristen, you’re... You hit your head. I think you’re confused” said Robert, keeping calm. “I know what I saw” said Kristen. “And what exactly was that?” asked Robert. She starred at him in disbelief. “You... You stopped the van. You pushed it away with your hand” replied Kristen. “Well, nobody’s gonna believe you, so...” said Robert, looked away for a second and looked back at her. “I wasn’t gonna tell anybody. I just need to know the truth” said Kristen. “Can’t you just thank me and get over it?” asked Robert angrily. “Thankyou” replied Kristen quickly. There was a pause. “You’re not gonna let this go, aren’t you?” asked Robert. “No” replied Kristen. “Well, then I hope you enjoy disappointment” said Robert. With that, he turned and walked towards his father and sister. Kristen just stood there in disgust.

Chapter Two School and Meeting the Simons and Davies

The next morning, Kristen drove to Forks High School. On the way there she started thinking about it. “My first day at a new school. It’s March, middle of the semester. Great” she thought. Everyone starred at her as she drove up and parked in a space in the student car park. The truck backfired as she parked. Kristen got out and started to walk away. “Nice ride” said a seventeen year old boy with short jet black hair, brown eyes and dark skin. “Thanks” said Kristen and continued to walk away. “Good one” said a girl standing to him.

Kristen to the office, to collect her timetable, a map of the school and passes of her teachers. As she was walking along a corridor, trying to memorize the map, a seventeen year old boy with short jet black hair and brown eyes walked up to her. Kristen looked up quickly. “You’re Kristen Charles, the new girl. Hi, I’m Justin Wilkes, the eyes and ears of this place” he said. They started walking down the corridor. “Anything you need, tour guide, lunch date, shoulder to cry on?” asked Justin. “I’m really kind of the more suffer-in-silence type” replied Kristen. “Good headline for the feature. I’m on the paper and you’re news, baby, front page” said Justin. Kristen looked at him horrified. “No, I’m not” she said. They stopped and looked at each other. “You... Please don’t have any sort of...” Kristen stuttered. Seeing this made her uncomfortable, Justin stopped her. “Chillax. No feature” he promised. “Ok, thanks” said Kristen smiling. “Cool?” asked Justin smiling back. Kristen nodded. She had been at school for three minutes and she had made a friend.

Just before lunch was P.E. and the girls were playing Volleyball, (Kristen least favourite sport). “All right. Ok. Yeah” shouted a girl. All the girls were chattering, all expect Kristen. She just stood there feeling like an idiot. Just the ball came towards Kristen. “Get it! Get it! Get it!” shouted someone. One girl helped Kristen knock the ball away. Kristen grunted. “To you!” shouted another girl and knocked the ball towards Kristen. Kristen knocked the ball to the side. It went towards with boys who were playing basketball, and hit one of them in the back of the head. “Whoa!” he gasped. Kristen had her hand over her mouth and went over to apologize. The boy was rubbing the back of his head. “I’m sorry. I told them not to let me play” said Kristen, as the boy looked up. The boy was seventeen and had short flat blond hair and bright blue eyes. When he saw it was Kristen who did it, his face lit up. “No way. No, no, no. That’s... That’s... Don’t... You’re Kristen Charles, right?” he asked. “Yes I am” Kristen replied. “Yeah. Hey, I’m Michael Stephens” he said shaking hands with Kristen. “Nice to meet you” said Kristen. “Yeah, yeah” said Michael. A seventeen year old girl with long straight brown hair that was tied back into a ponytail and bright blue eyes had been watching them, when she saw them shaking hands she went over to them. When she got to them, they turned and looked at her. “She’s got a great spike, huh?” she asked Michael. Michael chuckled, “Yeah, it’s...” replied Michael. The girl turned back to Kristen. “I’m Anna Newman, by the way. Hey, you’re from Arizona, right?” she asked. “Yeah” replied Kristen. “Aren’t people from Arizona supposed to be, like, really tan?” asked Anna. Kristen looked down. “Yeah. Maybe that’s why they kicked me out” she replied. She looked up quickly to see their reactions. Both Michael and Anna were laughing. “You’re good” said Michael calming down. “That’s so funny” said Anna, also calming down. Kristen made a face and went back to the Volleyball game. Michael went back to his Basketball game. “Back in, Anna” said the girls P.E. coach, as Anna went back. “Down here” said a boy from the Basketball game. Kristen couldn’t believe her luck, she had been at school for half a day and she now had three friends.

Lunchtime, Kristen walked to the cafeteria with Michael and Anna. Anna had let her hair down. She told Kristen that she only tied it back when they had P.E. The cafeteria was crowded with students getting their lunch. They got their lunch and went to a table. Justin was already there talking to some others. “Like a masterpiece, you know, we’ll have, like, this crazy pyramid fall from the sky, and then you guys can...” he cut off and the sight of Michael offering Kristen the seat next to him. “It’s my pleasure, Madame” said Michael and sat on Kristen’s other side. “You can give each other high fives” said Justin. “Burrito, my friend?” asked Michael. “Hey, Michael! You met my home girl, Kristen?” asked Justin. Kristen looked at him so did Michael and Anna. “Hey. Your home girl?” asked Michael. “Yeah” replied Justin. “Yeah?” asked Michael. “That’s...” started Justin. Just then the boy Kristen had seen in the car park this morning came up in between Kristen and Michael. “My girl” he said. With that, he kissed Kristen on the cheek and pulled Michael’s chair out from under him. As Michael fell, he ran off. Michael got up and chased after him. “Sorry I had to mess up your game, Michael!” he called as Michael ran after him. “Gregory Carpenter” said Justin and looked away. They all laughed. Kristen now looked away. “Yes!” came Gregory’s voice. “Oh, my God. It’s like first grade all over again. You’re the shiny new toy” said Anna, shifting closer to Kristen. Just then a seventeen year old girl with long straight black hair tied back into a ponytail, brown eyes and glasses came over. She had a camera in her hands. She sat down next to Anna, held the camera and pointed it at Kristen. “Smile” she said and took a photo. The flash nearly blinded Kristen, she blinked and looked down. “Ok” said Kristen. “Sorry. I needed a candid for the feature” said the girl. “The feature’s dead, Christian. Don’t bring it up again” said Justin. Anna looked at him. Kristen rubbed her forehead with her hand. Justin got up and started to walk away. Anna looked at Christian, while Kristen looked at Justin. Kristen looked quickly at Christian. “It’s ok, I just...” she started to say. “I got your back, baby” said Justin and walked off. “You’re Christian?” asked Kristen. “Christian Young, photographer” replied Christian. There was a short pause. “Guess we’ll run another editorial on teen drinking” said Christian. “You know, you can always go for eating disorders” said Kristen. Anna and Christian looked at her. “Speedo padding on the swim team” said Kristen, picking up a stick of celery. “Actually, that’s a good one. Kirk, Right?” said Christian. Anna laughed “Yeah” she replied. “That’s exactly what I thought. We’re talking Olympic-size” said Christian. “There’s no way. He’s so skinny. It doesn’t make sense” said Anna. “Totally” said Christian. “Yeah” said Anna. They both started to laugh.

Kristen was paying attention until something caught her eye. Four students were coming towards the door to the cafeteria. One was an eighteen year old boy with short flat brown hair, another was an eighteen year old girl with long straight blond hair, another was a seventeen year old girl with short messy brown hair and the last one was a seventeen year old boy with short messy blond hair. “Who are they?” she asked. Christian looked over and smiled. “The Simons and the Davies” she replied. Anna looked over and looked back with a smile on her face. “They’re Dr and Mrs Simon’s adoptive kids and foster kids. They moved down here from somewhere in Alaska, like, a few years ago” she said. “They kind of keep to themselves” said Christian. “Yeah, ‘cause they’re all together. Like, together, together. The blond girl, that’s Nikki Davies, and the big dark haired guy, Kellan Simon, they’re, like, a thing. I’m not even sure that’s legal” said Anna. “Anna, they’re not actually related” said Christian. “Yeah, but they live together. It’s weird. And, ok, the little dark-haired girl’s Ashley Simon. She’s really weird, and she’s with Jackson Davies, the blond one who looks like he’s in pain. Dr. Simon’s like this adoptive dad/foster dad/matchmaker” said Anna. “Maybe he’ll adopt me” said Christian. “Who’s he?” asked Kristen, noticing a seventeen year old boy with short sticky up brown hair walking into the cafeteria. Anna and Christian looked over and then back at Kristen smiling. “That’s Robert Simon. He’s totally gorgeous, obviously, but apparently nobody here’s good enough for him. Like I care, you know? So, yeah” said Anna, as he walked over to the table his family was sitting at. Kristen looked over at him as he sat down and didn’t look away for a moment. “Seriously, like, don’t waste your time” said Anna. Kristen looked back quickly. “I wasn’t planning on it” she said looking down and then back at the Simons and the Davies. As she looked at them, the one named Robert looked at her. For a moment they starred each other, until Robert looked away.

After Lunch was Biology, (Kristen’s favourite subject). Michael walked her to class. The teacher was Mr. Morgan. He was a twenty-four year old man with short black hair and dark blue eyes from behind a pair of glasses. “Mr. Morgan” said Michael as they walked in. “Hey, Michael” said Mr. Morgan. Michael then jested to Kristen and went to take his seat. “Oh, yes. Miss Charles” said Mr. Morgan, looking through the papers on his desk. As Kristen walked a little farther towards the teacher’s desk, she saw that Robert, Ashley and Jackson were in her class. Robert was sitting alone. Kristen stopped a few feet away from the teacher’s desk and looked at Robert. She was in front of a fan, that was on and it sent her hair blowing towards him. Suddenly, Robert went all ridged and put his hand over his mouth like he smelled something bad. Kristen couldn’t understand this, she looked down for a moment and moved away from the fan. “Hi. Can I have your pass?” asked Mr. Morgan. Kristen handed it to him. “Thankyou. Welcome to the class. Here” said Mr. Morgan. He handed her a textbook. “Here’s your stuff, ok? And I got you a seat for you right here, so come over. The last one. Just follow along till you catch up” said Mr. Morgan. The last seat was next to Robert (who still had his hand over his mouth) as Kristen sat down. Kristen looked at him. “All right, guys, today we are gonna be observing the behaviour of Planaria, aka Flatworms” said Mr. Morgan, placing two small glass jars on each table. When Mr. Morgan had left their table, Robert moved one of the jars towards Kristen with his other hand. Robert looked away and removed his hand from his mouth. Kristen held a strand of her hair and sniffed it, to see she was giving off a bad smell. She was surprised when she wasn’t. She turned and looked at Robert and his eyes looked straight back at her. His jet black eyes gave her the creeps and she looked away. All though the lesson Robert glared at her and she didn’t look back. Towards the end, Robert finally looked away, picked up his things and was out of his seat a second just before the bell sounded. Kristen was annoyed at his behaviour towards her. She shut her textbook and started to put everything in her rucksack. As she looked behind her, she saw at Robert’s behaviour had annoyed Ashley and Jackson as well.

It was the end of the day and everyone was going home. Kristen went to the office to drop off her passes, (she had been told to bring them back with every teacher’s signature on it). As she walked into the office, she saw Robert talking to the receptionist, Ms. Clarke. Ms. Clarke was twenty-six with short neat red hair and bright eyes. Kristen stood by the door and waited. “There must be something open. Physics? Biochem?” asked Robert. “No, every class is full. Just a minute, dear (that was said to Kristen). I’m afraid you’ll have to stay in Biology” replied Ms. Clarke. Robert looked over his shoulder at Kristen. Kristen starred at him in disbelief. “Fine. Just... I’ll have to endure it” said Robert angrily. He walked away from the counter and out the door. Kristen looked after him for a moment, felt the anger boiling up inside her, dropped her passes into a wires basket and left. It was raining as Kristen walked out of school. The student car park only had her truck and the ones that belonged to the Simons and the Davies. They were a grey Jeep Wrangler, a red BMW M3 Convertible, a silver Volvo S60R, a yellow Porsche 911 Turbo and a silver Ducati 848 motorbike. Only Kellan, Robert and Jackson were there, there was no sign of Nikki and Ashley. As she walked passed them, Kristen could feel Robert’s stare on the back of her neck. This annoyed Kellan this time. “Hey, Robert!” he said patting on the roof of the Volvo to try and get his attention. Kristen walked on to her truck and got in. Inside she felt the anger, she had been holding in boil over. “What!” she exclaimed and saw a look at Robert, who was still looking at her. She looked away quickly, started up the engine and drove away. What she didn’t know was what happened afterwards. As soon as she was gone, Kellan and Jackson looked at Robert who was still starring at the place Kristen had just been. “Robert, she’s not one of us” said Kellan, and looked away.

Kristen met Billy at a cafe for dinner. The waitress was named Ayanna, she was twenty-two with short curly black hair, brown eyes and dark skin. As she brought them their orders, (a garden burger for Kristen and steak for Billy), she couldn’t stop looking at Kristen. “I just can’t get over how grown up you are. And so gorgeous” she said. Just then, a thirty-six year old man with short brown hair and dark blue eyes came over to them. They looked up at him. “Hey, Kristen. You remember me?” he asked. Kristen looked blankly at Billy and then back at the man. “I played Santa one year” said the man. “Yeah, Ned, she hasn’t had a Christmas here since she was four” said Billy. “I bet I made an impression, though, didn’t I?” asked Ned. “You always do” said Billy, sprinkling salt on his meal. “Butt-crack Santa?” said the Ayanna. Kristen laughed and Billy smiled. “Hey, kids love those little bottles, though” said Ned. “All right, let the girl eat her garden burger, Ned” said the Ayanna. Ned walked away and Ayanna leaned on the table. “As soon as you’re done, I will bring you your favourite. Berry cobbler, remember? Your dad still has it. Every Thursday” she said and shot Billy a look. “Thankyou. That’d be great” said Kristen nodding. Ayanna smiled and walked away. Billy and Kristen reached for the ketchup bottle at the time. “Here” said Billy, picking up the ketchup bottle and giving it to Kristen. “Thanks” whispered Kristen. There was a moment of silence between them. “So you eat here every night?” asked Kristen. “Yeah! Better than doing dishes” replied Billy, with a chip in his mouth. “I can cook. I used to do all the cooking at home in Phoenix. Mum’s not great in the kitchen” said Kristen. “I remember” said Billy, wrapping his mouth on a napkin. “Chocolate Camels” they said together. This was a pause. “So, how was school? You meet anybody?” asked Billy. Kristen was looking down at her burger as she spoke. “Yeah, yeah, a couple of people” she replied. She looked up quickly and decided to do it. “Do you know the Simon family?” she asked. Billy looked at her. “Yeah, why? People talking about them again?” he asked. “Well, little bit” replied Kristen. “It only ‘cause they’re newcomers. Listen! The Simons, they’ve been nothing but nice ever since they moved here. People around here, they should be happy to have a surgeon like Dr. Simon up at the hospital. Happy his wife wanted to move to a small town and his kids. Those kids give me no trouble, unlike the other hell-raisers around here” said Billy, taking a drink of coffee from his mug. “Right” said Kristen looking back at her burger. “I just don’t like narrow-mindedness, you know?” said Billy.

Later that night, Kristen was in her room, sitting on the bed, doing her homework and listening to a call from Sarah in Florida. “Hey, baby. So, listen, if spring training goes well, we could be moving to Florida” said Sarah. “Please insert $1.25 for an additional three minutes” came an automated voice. “Mom, where’s your phone?” asked Kristen. “Ok, don’t laugh. I didn’t lose my power cord. It ran away” replied Sarah. Kristen couldn’t help it, she laughed. “Screaming. I literally repel technology now” said Sarah. “I miss you” said Kristen, calming down. “Oh, baby, I miss you, too. But tell me more about your school. Now what are the kids like? Are there any cute guys? Are they being nice to you?” asked Sarah. Kristen’s face fell. She sighed softly. “Well, they’re all very welcoming” she replied glumly. “Ott-oh! Tell me all about it” said Sarah. “It doesn’t even matter” said Kristen, shutting her folder. “Yes, it does, honey” said Sarah. “I have homework to do. I’ll talk to you later” said Kristen. “Ok. I love you” said Sarah. “Love you, too” said Kristen and hung up. She sighed and looked into space. She couldn’t get Robert’s strange black eyes out of her head.

Chapter One Moving back to Forks

Between the ages of six months and five years Kristen Charles lived in Riverside, California with her mother Sarah. The reason Kristen lives with her mother is that Sarah divorced Kristen’s father and moved from the place where he lived and where Kristen was born, Forks, Washington. When Kristen was five, Sarah married a Minor League Baseball Player called Ty Harris and he moved them to Phoenix, Arizona. Sarah had short, straight brown hair and bright blue eyes. Matt had short brown hair and also had bright blue eyes.

This story takes place twelve years later. By now Kristen had just celebrated her seventeenth birthday and a junior at Phoenix High School. Kristen has long, straight dark brown hair, brown eyes and for some strange reason very pale skin. She was tall and is of average weight. Kristen didn’t have any friends in Phoenix, to tell the truth, she didn’t fit in. Sarah was now thirty-four years and Ty was thirty-two. One hot day after breakfast Kristen went into the garden, dug up a little cactus she had planted at the beginning of the school year and re-planted it in a little clay pot. When she stood up, she stood there for a moment soaking in the sun. “So I can’t bring myself to regret the decision to leave home. I would miss Phoenix. I’d miss the heat. I would miss my loving, erratic, harebrained mother. And her new husband. But they want to go on the road, so I’m gonna spend some time with my dad, and this will be a good thing. I think” she thought, as walked back to the house. Out the front of the house Sarah stood there with Kristen. “Ok” said Sarah softly. She pulled Kristen towards her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Ty called from the car. “Sarah, come on. Guys, come on. I love you both. We got a plane to catch” he called. Sarah and Kristen looked at each other, picked up Kristen’s carry on bag and walked to the car. They all got in, backed out and drove to the airport with the windows rolled down. As they drove, Kristen starred out the window. Soon she was on the plane and leaving her old life far behind her.

The sunshine of Arizona soon turned to the clouds of Washington. It took four hours to fly from Phoenix to Seattle and then another hour to fly to Port Angeles. What Kristen was dreading was the one hour drive with her dad. He met her in Port Angeles with a police cruiser. Her dad had short brown hair, a moustache and brown eyes. As they drove Kristen looked out the window thinking. “In the state of Washington, under a near constant cover of clouds and rain, there’s a small town named Forks. Population, 3,120 people. This is where I’m moving. My dad’s Billy. He’s the chief of police. I used to spend two weeks here almost every summer, but it’s been years” she thought. Kristen looked out the windscreen as the sign for Forks came to view. She watched it as they passed it. She continued to stare out the window after that. They stopped at a set of traffic lights, while they were waiting, Kristen had looked down, when Billy turned and looked at her. “Your hair’s longer” he said and looked at the lights. Kristen looked at him and he looked back at her. She looked down at her hair. “I cut it since the last time I saw you” she said. “Guess it grew out again” said Billy. The light turned green and they drove off.

Soon they reached what was now Kristen’s new home. It was a two floored house with a porch and white wooden panels. There were trees in the front yard and the house was near a forest. Billy parked the cruiser in front of the house and they got out. As she got out, Kristen stood there for a moment and looked at the house. She shut the door and walked to the boot, where Billy was getting Kristen’s luggage out. They brought everything in and took it upstairs. “I’ve cleared some shelves off in the bathroom” said Billy. “Right. One bathroom” said Kristen. The bathroom was straight ahead. Next to it was an almost empty room. It was the first room on the left. This was to be Kristen’s room, they went into it. Kristen stood there and starred around. The walls were green, there was a rocking chair by the window, Billy had put a large wooden desk and a small glass desk in the room with a bendy lamp, there was a painting of a wolf hanging on the wall by the door, some the artwork from Kristen’s childhood was on two corkboards pinned to the wall, two lamps were placed in the room, one was on the chest of drawers and the other was on the bedside table. The bed was wooden double that aren’t been made. “It’s a pretty good work lamp” said Billy, as Kristen put the bag she was carrying on the floor. He turned to the bed. “The sales lady picked out the bed stuff. You like purple, right?” he asked. Kristen turned and looked at him, down to the bed and back at him. “Purple’s cool. Thanks” she replied and looked away. For a moment either of them spoke. “Ok” said Billy and walked out the room. Kristen watched him. Once Billy was gone, she stood there for while, taking another look around her room, down on the bed and held the cactus up. “One of the best things about Billy, he doesn’t hover” she said to the cactus. She smiled at the idea of talking to the cactus. Then she placed the cactus down on the bedside table, sighed stood up and went to start unpacking.

Later while Kristen was making the bed, there was the sound of a car horn honking outside. She walked to the window and looked out. Billy was in the front yard with a thirty-two year old man in a wheelchair and a sixteen year old boy. The man had long jet black hair. The boy also had jet black hair but his was short. They both had light brown skin, so Kristen knew that they must be from the Quileute reservation down by the coast. They were standing next to a faded red Chevrolet pickup truck. “Heard you guys coming all the way down the road” said Billy. “Good to see you” said the man. Kristen didn’t know what was going, so she decided to go and find out. As Kristen walked out, they turned and looked at her. Both the man and the boy had brown eyes. “Kristen, you remember Gil Brown” said Billy as she walked over. “Yeah. Wow, you’re looking good” said Kristen, as she shook his hand. “Well, I’m still dancing. I’m glad you’re finally here. Billy here hasn’t shut up about it since he told me you were coming” said Gil. He chuckled at Billy’s expression. “All right, keep exaggerating. I’ll roll you into the mud” said Billy walking away. Kristen and the boy started to laugh. “After I ram you in the ankles” said Gil, rolling his wheelchair after Billy. “You want to go?” asked Billy turned around and making the “bring it on” hand jesters. “Yeah. Bring it” replied Gil. While they pretend to fight, the boy walked up to Kristen. “Hi, I’m Taylor Brown” he said. “Hey” said Kristen. “We used to make mud pies when we were little” said Taylor. “Right. No, I remember” said Kristen. Taylor laughed and Kristen looked over at Billy and Gil. “Are they always like this?” she asked. “It’s getting worse with old age” Taylor replied. “Good” said Kristen. Billy and Gil came back over. “So, what do you think?” asked Billy, putting a hand on the truck. “Of what?” asked Kristen, looking at him. “Your homecoming present” replied Billy. “This?” asked Kristen, pointing at the truck. “Just brought off Gil here” replied Billy looking down at Gil. “Yep” said Gil, patting it. “I totally rebuilt the engine for you” said Taylor. Kristen couldn’t believe this. “Come on. Oh, my gosh! This is perfect. Are you joking me?” she asked happily. She was so happy, it spilled over. Taylor followed her, as she was the driver’s side door. She opened the door and accidently hit him, Taylor grunted. “Sorry” said Kristen. She got in, while Taylor went round the other side. “I told you she’d love it. I’m down with the kids” said Gil, pointing to himself. “Oh, yeah, dude. You’re the bomb” said Billy.

Taylor got in with Kristen. “Ok. Listen, you gotta double-pump the clutch when you shift, but besides that, you should be good” he said. “That’s this one?” asked Kristen pointing. “Yeah. Yeah, right there” replied Taylor. “All right” said Kristen and started the engine up. “Do you want a ride to school or something?” asked Kristen looking at him. “I go to school on the reservation” replied Taylor. Kristen’s heart sunk. “Right, right” she said. “Yeah” said Taylor looking down. “That’s too bad. It would’ve been nice to know one person” said Kristen.
