I know what the words mean, what I'm wondering is why Stephenie Meyer thinks teenage girls form sentences like this. Its not intelligent or sophisticated--its barely coherent! Like she wanted to "spice up" a perfectly normal phrase and decided to look up the more "poetic" variations of words and just string them together, not caring whether or not they made sense. "Fluttered" is a nice word, though I doubt Bella actually *saw* Chelsea's power "flutter" like a butterfly against her *mental* shield. "Impotent" is fine too, although not entirely common. But put them together like that and you get poorly constructed purple prose. ~P.a.C.
