The company was originally founded in the early 90's and launched by Patrick Wachsberger, Bob Hayward and David Garrett under the name Summit Entertainment LP. In 2006 it became fully independent under the direction of Rob Friedman, a former executive at Paramount Pictures. The studio found its biggest success in 2008 with Twilight, which brought the company more than 70 million dollars in ticket sales in the US and Canada in its opening weekend. Since 2007, Summit has released DVDs through a distribution agreement with Universal Studios.
