A newborn is a vampire that has been recently turned. Newborns may be used to win territory, threaten enemies, and other advantages. Newborns are stronger than older ones, but do lose a little of their strength after one year.
Personality
They are often blood-thirsty, violent and uncontrollable. A newborn's emotions are hard to control and they anger easily. Bella Cullen was an exception to this rule, as she had time to think about her decision and therefore did not have the first brutal year that most vampires encounter. Nevertheless, she amazingly controlled her thirst for human blood. Carlisle too showed amazing self control and passed with ease through his newborn year.
Some indications which show a newborn are their bright red eyes (due to blood left in body at time of changing), uncontrollable thirst (except in Bella Cullen's case) and incredible strength. In the Cullen clan, Emmet Cullen was the worst when they were changed.

Newborns appear much like normal vampires with exception of their eyes. A newborn's eyes appear to be a crimson red due to the human blood still in the vampire's system. If a vampire feeds on animal blood during their first year, the red will fade to amber and then gold. But if the vampire feeds on human blood, the eyes will darken to be almost a burgundy color. Newborns are also incredibly strong, much stronger than a regular vampire. As they become older their strength begins to weaken to the strength of a normal vampire. In Breaking Dawn Bella has an arm-wrestle with Emmett and she wins because of her newborn strength. Emmett is very annoyed about it afterwards.
History
The Cullens against the Newborns.
A vampire named Benito originally invented the idea of creating a newborn army. With a large group of vampires fighting together, they were hard to stop. This triggered the vampire wars of the south and had caused devastation within the vampire population as a result. A newborn army also appeared in Eclipse when Victoria created one in Seattle, with the intent of destroying Bella Swan and the Cullens. The newborns caused carnage in Seattle, with many, many people dying at their hands. In Eclipse, Jasper mentions a Mexican vampire named Maria who had previously created an army along with Jasper. When the newborns grew and became of little use Jasper was to dispose of them. In one experience Jasper let Peter and Charlotte, two newborns he had befriended at the time, run off. They came back to Jasper and told them about the better life in the North and he left along with them.
