Garrett was an adventurer and one of the nomadic vampires of America. He was called to become a witness for the Cullen family when they were faced with the Volturi. It is implied that he was created around the time of the American Revolutionary War; he alluded to fighting as an American Patriot. Garrett did not have any additional talents, although he enjoyed challenges. He was intrigued by the Cullens and the Denali coven's lifestyle of drinking animal blood instead of human blood. He later told Aro that he believed abstaining from human blood can be a powerful aid to the ability of bonding between vampires. While being a witness, he learned about this lifestyle through Kate, from the Denali coven. Eventually, when the the Volturi fled, he left with the Denali coven and became Kate's mate.

Garrett was described as a tall, rangy vampire with eager ruby eyes and long sandy hair tied back in a ponytail. He is described by Bella as a surprisingly good teacher, and interacts easily with others in general. Garrett is apparently very adventurous and probably very curious, evident in the fact that he accepted Kate's challenge to experience her ability.
