Biography
Charles was a violently unpredictable man and a very abusive husband who frequently mistreated his wife, but his gentle exterior covered this personality from the public. He was drafted as a soldier in World War I. Esme was happy during his absence, until he returned in 1918, and the mistreatment came back again, much to her dismay. She discovering that she was carrying a child in 1920, she could not stand the thought of her baby being raised such a man, so she escaped. Charles first found her at a cousin's house, but she escaped again before he could get to her. This time, he never found her again.
Presumably, Charles never knew of his son's existence, nor of his death shortly after birth. Also then, he most likely never knew about his wife's suicide attempt, nor her subsequent change into a vampire by the one who would later become her second husband, Carlisle Cullen.
When Edward Cullen went astray to lead a traditional nomadic lifestyle of vampires, he dedicated himself to only killing evildoers, thinking that his feedings were justifiable: Charles was his first victim.
