- This article is about Esme Cullen's ex-husband. For the nomadic vampire, please click here.
Charles Evenson was Esme Cullen's first husband. They married when she was still human. He was born in the late 1800's. His abusive personality drove his wife away when she got pregnant, and in 1928, he was murdered by Esme's adopted son, Edward Cullen. His Life and Death counterpart was an alcoholic woman who went on a drunken rampage and jumped off a cliff with Grace, her two-year-old daughter, in her arms.
Charles was portrayed by Eddie Troy in the Masque segment of The Twilight Storytellers - the New Voices of the Twilight Saga.
Charles was a violently unpredictable man and a very abusive husband who frequently mistreated his wife, but his gentle exterior covered this personality from the public. He was drafted as a soldier in World War I. Esme was happy during his absence, until he returned in 1918, and the mistreatment came back again, much to her dismay. When she discovered that she was carrying a child in 1920, she could not stand the thought of her baby being raised by such a man, so she escaped. Charles first found her at a cousin's house, but she escaped again before he could get to her. This time, he never found her again.
Presumably, Charles never knew of his son's existence, nor of his death shortly after birth. Also then, he most likely never knew about his wife's suicide attempt, nor her subsequent change into a vampire by the one who would later become her second husband, Carlisle Cullen.
When Edward Cullen went astray to lead a traditional nomadic lifestyle of vampires, he dedicated himself to only killing evildoers, thinking that his feedings were justifiable: Charles was his first victim.
In the short segment, Charles had short blond hair, blue eyes, pale skin and a masculine build matched by a gentleman-like outfit.
