Alpha

An Alpha is a leader of a werewolf pack.
They did not consider themselves as Alpha or Beta until Bella started using those terms.

In the original La Push pack, Ephraim Black was the Alpha. It therefore seemed obvious that Ephraim's heir would become the next Alpha. However, Sam Uley became a "werewolf" first, so he was the Alpha. When Jacob Black became a werewolf, the leadership was offered but he refused. Jacob later became the Alpha of his own pack after there was an argument between him and Sam. It is tradition that the Alpha of the pack is technically the leader of the entire Quileute tribe.
The position of Alpha could also apparently be fought over. When Jacob took his rightful place as Alpha to keep Sam from attacking the Cullens, Sam thought that he meant to usurp him.

The Alpha is responsible for the pack, as well as the entire tribe. They are the leader of the wolves and must control the other wolves. This is useful because they lead into battle against a vampire . After he rises to Alpha, Jacob mentions feeling paternal towards the other wolves in his pack when there is a threat of danger, like he should be between them and the danger.

Like all werewolves, Alphas are able to talk to packmates through their minds. Indeed, all thoughts are shared, whether the individuals like it or not. Alphas can also talk to other Alphas from different packs although the two Alphas choose which thoughts to share. The power of the Alpha comes from its pack. Also, Alphas can control their pack; if they command something to happen, the wolves must comply.
